Hello all,

I'm looking to learn more about the hosting companies I see all around WHT. Who here has a network status page on their hosting company's site that shows server status and so forth. Even if the site isn't yours, feel free to post other's sites that have these pages.

They're useless unless your site is hosted on a different network. How's someone supposed to know of the network trouble if they can't get to the site? So, no I don't have one on my site just for that reason. I think MCHost has a network status page on it, I'm not sure on that though.

The importance behind it is to tell you what servers are down. Obviously if a customer cannot access their site, and they also cannot access the hoster's site, then the problem is either that their connection is down, or all of the host's servers are down.

I've seen a number of web hosts that have a network status page, and I've witnessed when one or two servers are actually dfown, yet their website is still up.

I'm planning on making one of these, that is hosted on a shell on another box, and it's also mirrored on another, so if the network goes down, there is still a page to report so.

Actually I am working on this now. I have a server located off network that will ping my network. I then call the script from my web site to show that the network is active. If the network is down it will e-mail me. I'd like to work on the script more and make it so it calls me instead.

I just don't know enough about modem connectivity, and would have to do this on a server connected to a phone line.

I suggest that you do some more advanced checking than a ping ... maybe some port scanning, or some tcp connections to make sure apache or whatever service hasn't crashed.

Create a network status page and your asking a script kiddie to see if he can make all the servers turn red, if you want to allow customers to see the status of their server create a form or login area specifically for that customer. Listing all your servers on a webpage is also not a real bright idea security wise, sure that information is accessable and avaliable however broadcasting your server names/ips is just looking for trouble.

Security is a mentality not an application

You bring up a good point.

Yet, as you also said, that information is more than easily available, it's just the 3 minutes less work of having a network status page open to the public that makes it that much more appealing to the script kiddies.

I plan to make a nice little page that can fit on my Zaurus' screen, so I can check my network's status on one page from most places in the world. It's kind of an empowering feeling to have all of that at your fingertips anywhere there are wireless networks.

theboxnetwork.net/network.php

I built in live view cam's from the EV1 datacentre which I got from my data centres main site. Added the mrtg traffic of all the backbones on the multi homed network we use and also added a detailed mtrg for every server that i own which show uptimes, bandwith usage cpu usage so on. Looks quite cute.

Greetings:

http://dni.network-status.com/

1. The system is hosted on an entirely separate network.

2. The system is a part of We Manage Servers enterprise network monitoring system, and is a free add on for hosting providers.

Thank you.
