I have been considering moving my servers to a server farm or getting new dedicated servers to take away some of my work load. One company I was considering was rackshack do to a few recommendations. They were a consideration right up until I found out:

1)They charge sales tax. I do not know about their state but I know CT and most others do NOT charge sales tax for sales or services provided to parties outside the state.

2)Refund and Disputes: All payments to RackShack, Inc. are nonrefundable. This includes the one time setup fee and subsequent charges regardless of usage. All overcharges or billing disputes must be reported within 60 days of the time the dispute occurred. If you dispute a charge to your credit card issuer that, in RackShack's sole discretion is a valid charge under the provisions of the TOS and /or AUP, you agree to pay RackShack an "Administrative Fee" of not less than $50 and not more than $150.

3)You can not have anymore than 32 IP address on any one server.

4)They charge $1.00 per IP address, am I the only one that still gives IP's away free? I mean come on that's almost as bad as OLM charging $5.00 a month for squirrelmail which is FREE.

I feel bad for newbie's who don't know much and get suckered out of so much money.

At any rate, can any one recommend a GOOD co-lo or dedicated server company where I am not going to pay large amounts of money? Especially for things that are free to them?

You would get a much better response if this was posted in the Dedicated Hosting Forum, as opposed to this one. I'm sure a mod will move it though.

Personally, I'd say FDC... don't shoot me here, there network has improved greatly. I'm not sure of any others right now that are offering good colo deals.. look in the dedicated forums or the special offers, I'm sure you'll find something.

Hey these forums are owned by RackShack....

I am not looking for offers, I am looking for recomendations.

I don't think you could consider Rackshack as a Rip-off. They may be lacking in terms of managed support but I believe that the company is run in full compliance of the law. I am not sure about the taxation policy of each state but I am not too overly concerned. For my $99 webserver, I am paying about $6 in sales taxes. Even if you lump the rate together, it is still cheaper than what others charges.

They do not charge for the first 7 IP addresses requested but after that it is $1/mth which is reasonable. You could always opt for others which offers more IPs but charge more. They probably bundle the costing together.

There is a general shortage of IP addresses and by charging for it would stop anyone from abusing the system by requesting more than required. Besides in today's context, you can always share an IP address so I do not really see the need for more unless you intend to set up multiple SSL.

Some providers offer free IPs if you comply with ARIN Guidelines, I know WebReseller does this... not really sure on what others do, since I haven't browsed much.

1. I once contacted Mr Philips who works with The Tax Policy Division of the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts (how does he fit that on his business card?) and they confirmed to me by email that RS has to charge the 8.25% tax.

I found it weird to be paying taxes in Texas US while I don't even live in the entire country but... that be the law.

2. Probably to keep the cost down. Cheap servers attract a lot of people who don't know how to manage them, blaim it on RS and ask their money back. No refunds=no administration=no staff.

3. Not a clue about that

4. Not completly true. The first 8 IP's are free of charge

The Texas tax law is unfortunately absolutely true.

It's the christmas season but I believe you could always call, fax or drop them an email to tell them how many machines you want to order and the specifications and see what they can do for you. I have not tried but it probably worth the try.

You guys are scaring me... I had a server in my NOC out for 2 hours once for an upgrade and I thought my customers were gonna eat me alive. I am switching to a datacenter to keep this from happening...

Ohhh Mario R. I need your saving skills again.

I am trying to get my IP's and its not going so well... I am getting half baked answers like:

##########################################
Dear Customer,

You can use these reasons to request IP's for IP based sites which will let you run the following.
##########################################

That's really the whole email sent to me too... No trouble ticket, no more answers, thats it...

At any rate I spoke to the RS sales staff a few days ago, Friday or Saturday I think and asked a bunch of questions and told them the story. Hey I have a NOC here wanna move to a server farm bla bla bla.

I used mostly IP based sites and I was told no problem except for the 32 IP limit per server etc etc.

Now they wont even give me the 22 I need for server 1:( Or will they and their response is just a little garbled?

I only setup 2 servers with them so far to test the water, I still have three more to setup and move... I don't want to have all kinds of trouble with all 5...

So Mario can you save the day again please?
