Hello,
I am hoping someone knows what would cause a server with 2 xeon processors to go out of control it looks like it can't find the processors or something with the kernals.
I think it may red hat 7.3 not being compatible with these specs, I can't find anywhere a listing on a conflict between 7.3 and 2 dual xeon processors.
Please help.....
I was thinking I should install 8.0 and try it on that. Or maybe I should return the piece and stick dual petiums.
Thanks,
Charles

You're not making any sense. Are the process jumping around and trying to kill each other?

Kind of like Pac Man. :)

Good question...
I guess I was hopeing some one had a 2 dual xeon processor server with red hat and new had to run them together, By red hat's defualt it doesn't work.
I wish I could be more specific but the logs say processor not found but the monitors show the processor's fine. There is a kernal error that I am working on I hope that's it.
Thanks, Charles

A couple of things you should be aware of. Red Hat does not currently support hyper-threading within the new xeon chips. Support should be available within 6 months in the 2.5.x series.
Now this doesn't mean they won't work, they just won't work as desired.
Second if you are running an SMP machine with 2.4.18-3 (which I believe is the default kernel for 7.3) and SCSI drives, there's a bug which causes the kernel to 'freak' out sporadically. To correct it either compile a new kernel (anything above .18) or locate the patch on redhat.com

CipherVendor,
Sorry, but that's wrong. I have a dual Xeon 2.0 ghz and RH 7.3 says that it's a 4 way box if I enable Hyperthreading @ the BIOS level. It does recognize they hyperthreading.

Pardon my ignorance, but why would the OS really even have to be aware of hyperthreading? Since it's simulating multiple processors it seems to me that as long as you have the smp kernel then there is nothing else to do.
Of course, I'm a bit green on HT and how it is implemented from a technical sense.

Thank you, that's makes since.
I just have a default 7.3 install for a server.
I have specailized tech doing it now for $150 he is updateing the kernal and securing the server.
Thanks, Charles
He updated the kernal to one that doesn't support multi processor's. The server works good like this but I think it doesn't utalize the other 3 processor's which would be nice since I paid a arm and a leg for them.
But it won't go crazy anymore whick should give me time to find the right kernal and install it.
Does anyone know if it stops using the other proccesors woth a kenal that doesn't support SMP?
It only shows one int he web hosting manager under system information.
Thanks, Charles

Compile 2.4.20 with SMP support and the machine should become stable.
