I have a quick question - why does it cost more per domain to host multiple domains at many hosting companies? What extra resources are being consumed that justify an extra monthly charge? (I'm not talking about companies that register the domain for you, just fees associated with hosting it)

It doesnt cost anything, they are just charging you for that domain option.

I've always felt that you should be able to buy disk space and data transfer and carve those resources up into as many domains as you like. Buy hey, that's just my opinion. :D

But then that company will put: "Host unlimited domains"...

They then get slated. So you need to set a limit, even if its just for publicity.

But there is a cost I guess, as many control panels charge on a domain basis, it may be in the 200/400/unlimited range, but theres a difference in price.

If you do a search, you'll notice that generally the cost per domain is usually lower for the multiple accounts. Otherwise there is no point in offering it.

There might be other factors involved here. Without seeing the plans you were referring too, I can only speculate.

Sometimes the multiple accounts are branded as reseller's account which usually allow others to resell it into smaller package. As such, these may contain different configuration which might include private DNS, larger bandwidth allocated and so on.

That would probably add to the cost of the account.

More domains means that there is a higher probability that you would actually utilize the full resources of the plan, thus the higher price.

my 2 cents worth

If you feel that the cost involved in a multiple domain account to be not cost effective, you might want to consider purchase two separate account instead. I believe you are free to do that.
