Hey guys, pretty soon I'm going to be looking to roll out a new remote backup solution for clients. A good comparison would be what BQbackup.com is offering, although we wouldn't be doing the exact same packages.

We've looked at many systems out the past couple of weeks watching prices but would like some outside input. What would you guys recommend for entry-mid level systems with scalability. We are wanting an iScsi SAN at the moment so any thoughts would be appreciated.

Price at this point isn't that large of an issue but we're looking for entry-mid to test it out and not sink too much capital in it.

Thanks!

I've tried a lot of Offsite Backup providers but didn't think the setups they used were that good.

BQBackup is the best one I've used so far. RsyncPalace is good too.

I will also be trying Backomatic soon.

OP: Are you trying to say you are planning to sell backup for your clients just like bqbackup ?

Yes my mistake, let me clarify. We are actually looking to offer Remote Website backups as well as Remote server backups.

We are open to different ways of setting it up so any and all recommendations are appreciated.

There is a business. If you want to try - lets do it.

bqbackup is the best as of now, probably you may try to replicate what they are using for their systems

Are your customers normal home users wanting to backup their computer data, hosting customers wanting to backup their website data or server customers wanting to backup their entire servers? For the last two, I would recommend R1Soft CDP.

Well we are trying to keep every avenue open as a possibility.

@Prashant We are looking to offer different types of backup solutions, very similar to what you're proposing.

An entry level package for website users with a different tier that can work out for bigger sites, i.e. Hosting, forums, or partial system back up. The last would be the full server backup, I think this model should work out.

The real question would be what hardware configuration to use.

We host some very large online back up companies with both managed colo and unmanaged colo - here is how htey started and what they have grown to

they start off with a sonicwall firewall ( any firewall would do i guess)
a switch and a Dell 2950 with 6 TB hard drives, and then they attach 3 2TB external drives - they run Windows Server OS.
Next step is they add a storage array -

good luck

When you say a SAN do you want a no-kidding SAN from someplace like equalogic? If so what type of budget range are you looking at?

If you want to stick on the lower side of things checkout DRBD or open-e. That will let you build a redundant fileserver using commodity hardware.
