Im trying to chose between selling windows 2000 or unix hosting packages.

Whats the most popular type of hosting package with your customers - windows or unix?

Depends entirely on what software technologies your clients would probably require.
If you are targeting only designers then linux is fine
If s.w dev community who work on ms platform then you have to offer that.

Best is to have both.

Our sites on Linux to nt are in ratio of 2:1.

Again this can not just be generalised.
Depends on what you can sell and what your target segment requires from you.

I would recommend offering both, if possible. I would say that most people would prefer Unix-based hosting for several reasons such as speed, reliability, etc. However, there is a growing amount of users that are looking for Windows hosting to run their MS-SQL or Access databse driven websites. Also if they have ASP powered sites Windows is the logical choice. (Although ASP can be run on Linux with software such as ChiliSoft!ASP, connecting to Windows databases becomes more difficult). ColdFusion is another reason to go with a Windows host (Again, there is a port of the ColdFusion software to linux, but it's harder to find, and most people don't yet know aobut it). So there are pros and cons to offering each, and the best solution is to offer both...

This thread might be better suited for the "Reselling, Referring, Agents and Start-Ups" forum.

How many damn polls about Unix vs Win can we have?
You don't take survey everysingle day.
I prefer "Winix"

Personally we prefer Unix. Windows makes sense only when you are very specific about ASP/MSSQL/CF.
In practice, Windows is more expensive too.

Some of our clients made a decision in favour of Unix and are happy. This after they came asking for Windows and were given a demo and all details about Unix/Linux.

We see the market tilting more and more towards Unix.
Once we have good software support in terms of CF for Unix, development software (IDE), MySQL with all features of MSSQL and more.
If Oracle brings costs down and promotes its Unix based webdatabases, that will surely help.

Cheers

My opinion about Unix/Linux vs. NT: If you don't know which you should offer, then you should offer Unix.

Every OS has its specs so you figure out what your customers will need or what will be your main focus and also which one do you know how to manage.

That's another way to look at it! :)

If I were you, I'd go for Unix. It's more affordable and reliable. That said, for some stuff like Access databases, Windows is usally required. But then, who would be dumb enough to run a web site off of Access? LOL! :D

Actually many. We have quite a few sites that use Access Database. In fact we also provide mysql to them for use with asp scripts thru linux server but they are more comfortable with access so let them be happy.

In fact more of our sites use access than Sql (on Nt)

may sound strange but it is true , atleast for us.

personally, i like unix because of stability/reliability alone...the company i work for offers an interesting solution...both is good, but how about a unix server with FP extensions???

Keeps most people happy...but ultimately, i believe you must have an nt server for ssi, asp etc.

good luck!

My UNIX server is 2500 miles (4023 kM) away from me. My Windows 2000 PC is on the desk in front of me.

I am far more concerned when I reboot my Windows 2000 desktop than I am when I reboot my UNIX server. I shudder at the thought of trying to manage a Windows box at a distance of more than a few feet from me.

This discussion isn't new. First of all as NT is right now it's not easy to manage it from a remote place. NT isn't like UNIX where you have allot of tools to do remote management. NT is also costly and control panel is hard to find.

Now whether you do NT or UNIX is truly up to you. The question is what market are you trying to market like someone said before. NT developers aren't going to go to a UNIX host to get an account do do development, they will go to NT host and vise versa. If you're just starting out and not quite sure which way to go, I'll suggest going to UNIX first. It's allot easier and then add NT servers later. But you must decide on your target market. That's where the decision comes into play.
