Hi,

I just read on a Site (I think it was the Kikkonetworks-Site) that Cobalt has stop to produce the RAQ3-Series !

I did not find this Info on the Cobalt Site but when I look in the Product-Section the RAQ3 is not listed.

Can anybody confirm this Info ?

Yep it's true. Sun Cobalt will continue releasing security updates for the RAQ3 for 18 months. But no feature enhancements or further system updates will be released from now on.

Time to dump your RAQ'S now guys!

I know I will...
I loved the RAQ and I learned a lot with it.
Now I know a lot more about servers and webhosting and think and know it's time to move on.

I still think that most of the beginners should start with a RAQ but then again a pentium III with a decent cp can do the trick just the same and even better...

Oh well, what a useless post ;-)

My question is where can you find webhosting services for the same price as 4webspace and rackshack?

Good post.

I started out with my own RAQ two years ago and now have two Red Hat servers and three FreeBSD servers. All A LOT more powerful than the RAQ. Unfortunately I still have a bunch of old RAQ3s to look after at work. The company invested too much in them to just use them as expensive doorsteps or something. (my suggestion)

Once you become acquainted with system administration without the cobalt panel you can take these experiences and get a decent server.

I'm at that point but I can't find a company that offers same in bandwidth as a TB or Rackshack. I found this company thru some other post http://www.escaladenet.com/services/dedicated/linux.htm but they seem to charge a lot for bandwidht.

Let's hope this drives the prices of the RaQ4s down...

You're never going to get a decent dedicated server with good connectivity for $99 a month and 150GB of bandwidth chucked in.

I figure if a RAQ3 or RAQ4 was receiving that much traffic it would probably just die anyway. So they can probably oversell that much knowing the RAQs arent even capable of using that much bandwidth lol.

You can get a server at www.weinbar.com for $199 a month and 50GB of bandwidh thrown in. They do FreeBSD and Red Hat. The great thing I can see with Weinbar is they offer very attractive rates on extra bandwidth paid for in advance and in bulk.

Alternatively we have looked at www.venturesonline.com. Their 50GB monthly plan includes a PIII 866 Mhz processor, 256MB RAM, 30 Gig hard drive, Cpanel and Web Hosting Manager and 20 IP addresses. It costs $300 a month. The downside is they're with VDI and VDI are having some problems at the moment. (to say the least)

Keep your eyes peeled on the Advertising Offers section of this site. Companies often publish special deals where they throw in a large chunk of bandwidth on a "proper server". They might be lower spec servers but they're still a helluva lot more powerful than the RAQ3 & 4s.

I've had a RaQ4 pushing nearly 1mbit of data for an extended period of time. That's somewhere around 300gb a month. The RaQs are very capable of pushing a lot of bandwidth. However, I do agree that for $99 a month you can't expect a lot. Bandwidth charges alone would be close/over that...

Just so that everyone knows I sent a message to these guys http://www.escaladenet.com Friday about noon asking about their dedicated server plan and still have not got an answer its 2 hours from noon on saturday. I also tried calling them on friday since it was within thier business hours and I had no responce. They offer good prices for what you would get but I think their customer service might be a little bad.
