troboy,

I'm not certain on how set you are on asteriskNOW, however I'd strongly suggest taking a look into elastix or trixbox instead as both have full pdf manuals on setup/configuration that will help if you're just starting out.

If your looking into getting into the guts of Asterisk and don't mind your guide to be in dead tree format I recommend a book called "Asterisk The Future of Telephony"

Another recommendation for starting out is to get the virtualisation software VirtualBox and use that to experiment with a variety of different asterisk distributions to see what is right for you.

You'll also want to look into 'Asterisk without tears'. Great book.

Great book and if you do a little searching it is available for full free download in PDF format on the web in several places...

Totally agree with the book recommendation for TFOT, do yourself a favor and learn Asterisk concepts and configuration from the inside out.

Having a GUI to do everything, although "easy", doesn't teach you all that much.

Asterisk can be a pain to configure and has a few bugs. Best advice I can offer you is use the install instructions step by step based on the flavor of linux you are running. Making any small mistake will lead you to hours of work maybe even reformatting so I would suggest you be very careful.
