My site http://www.funs.co.uk worked good on there servers untill about 12 hours ago, and since then it has not worked.

There is nothing wrong with the server and I think its there dns.

They claim there is nothing wrong with there dns, but I can't see what else the problem is.

Then I go to chat and after about 30 mins are no further forward with them, and they say they need to know my registar so they can find out some info but they won't tell me what info they need to find.

Then they say they can't work with my domain because it does not have a registar so they can't find out the info they need.

I can't understand as why should it matter about the registra as the domain is pointing to there name servers and I can't see anything else a registra would have to do with it.
http://www.nic.uk/cgi-bin/whois.cgi?query=funs.co.uk

Considering it worked okay till about 12 hours ago I can't see why they can't fix it, and work with my domain.

I would ring them but I live in the uk and considering how long they leave you standing its not worth it.

can any one help me and tell me what they think the problem is, and why they would need to find some info, which they can't tell me, and can only find if I had a registra, I already told them if they need some info i would ring up nominet uk in the morning.

I actually don't have a registra as my domain is held on a neutral nominet tag, but still I can't see how any of that matters.

I know this thread may not totally belong is this forum, but it also does as it shows how bad rackshack are, I don't expect much from them but they can't even explain to me why my domain just suddenly won't work.

Looks like a DNS problem:

dig @ns1.rackshack.net FUNS.CO.UK

How can I make them undertsand that it is a dns problem, I have told them loads of times but they still say its not a dns problem.

I can't see what problem it could be other than dns, but they either don't know how to do the dns or there is some problem before the domain gets to the dns server which is what I think they are trying to say.

Can some one tell me how I shodul go about convincing them it is dns problem.

Go to:
http://www.rackshack.net/
And click on Members.

Within, you will see a DNS Configuration link....go there..

Then there is a "click here to add DNS" link.
This is what I use to add DNS entries into their system. I think it is automated so nobody can screw up the entries.... ;)

Usually, the DNS is ready in about 30 minutes using this procedure.

===============
Now the above is not a solution to their poor tech support, but at least you can get your site back up.

I will try adding the dns myslef again, but was abit worried to as they say its there and correct and I did not know if I could as I originally got the dns done during set up when I signed up.

I'll try it though and hopefully it will work.

It worked redoing the dns from the members area, its not perfect as I don't have access any more by an address like http://funs.co.uk but since most people put the www in front that should not be a problem.

I am worried now to get them to add the cnames I requested, as the first time they did somthing to the dns next time they will probably do the same.

It makes me sad though that I told them loads of times it was a problem with the dns and they kept saying it was not.

I think to fix that part of your problem is (if your using a raq 4) place funs.co.uk in the Web Server Aliases part of your domains setup. That worked for me.

Well after getting it to work by submitting the dns from the members area again and getting it to work it looks like the dns has broke again and now my site is offline again looks like I will have to submit again, hope I don't have to do this every day.

Does any one have any idea why my dns wouldl keep disapearing I mean can the server delete it itself or is it more likely they keep removing it.

Have you tried to submit a trouble ticket through the members area? If not, you way want to give this a shot. I think Rackshack outsources part of their tech support to ev1.net when you submit a ticket....

A DNS cannot automatically remove a domain name (at least that I am aware of). Someone or some script must have deleted your domain. I added one yesterday and have not had any problems.

Yer I submitted a trouble ticket they have been working on the problem so they say for over 48 hours but they say its not a dns problem so I just don't know what to do.

Well I can access the site now, but i know most people can't but I was looking at my ad impressions and it looks like every so often it works okay and it seems that a few people can still access, so maybe they are not lying maybe the dns is all okay.

Does any one know any other problem it can be then if its got nothing to do with dns, I figured that if I did a tracer route at samspade.org the domain should go to there name servers at least but nothing happens, which is strange I think But it must be somthing to do with who ever tells computers that the doamins dns is located here I don't have a clue how a computer knows what name servers are used for a site but could that be broken for my domain, I know that the site originally worked perfect untill the other day so I don't know why it would stop working.

12:39pm {root}[18]#nslookup www.funs.co.uk ns1.rackshack.net
Server: ns1.rackshack.net
Address: 207.218.223.132

*** ns1.rackshack.net can't find www.funs.co.uk: Non-existent host/domain

Can you get to your site using the IP address? If so, then your server is working properly and the only problem is with Rackshack's DNS. The output above shows that your site is not in their nameservers.

Do you have DNS running on your own server? If so, you way want to turn it off until everything is sorted out.

yes I can access the server with the ip, I don't have dns on the server running either.

Jkcity, how about using a 3rd party DNS server instead of RackShack's? There are some free ones out there, and many domain name registrars allow you to use their at little or no extra charge.

I was looking at using a free third party service but could not find a suitable one.

Rackshack still have not fixed the problem but last night someone in the chat managed to fix one of the records and they fianlly told me it was a dns problem, hopefully they will get the rest of the records fixed soon.

They only got http://funs.co.uk to point to the server, that link won't work by clicking it but it does go to the server..

Tnkas for the offer.

But it takes 3-4 days for me to get name server schange dont he domain because I don't have a registra and so I have to submit alll the changes to nominet uk myself and that takes way longer.

I htink rackshack might the dns fixed hpefully before 4 days so i think my best option is to wait and see if they will fix it, but its laready into the fifth day ofnot working and them trying to fix it, I actually find it really strange as no one else seems to have a problem and rackshack have actually got one record to work although its completly usless but proves the domain is pointing in the right place.

I am actually starting to feel as if they are doing it to me on purpose as I can't understand why its only happening for my domain.
