A) I havent signed up with anything with powweb
B) Im a host myself
i think this is rather lame.
HighLineHost 12-18-2002, 09:10 AM Welcome to the great list of spam, I gave up a long time ago LOL..
Reptilian Feline 12-18-2002, 09:10 AM All too common... :(
Darth 12-18-2002, 09:33 AM I was reading an article in computer active (uk magazine) and spammers are now using the "net send" feature to send spam :(
alphadesk 12-18-2002, 10:17 AM Did PowWeb send the email or InboxBargains.com? What I'm asking is who actually is doing the spamming.
UH-Matt 12-18-2002, 10:20 AM I get loads of spam from hosts.
Just ignore it rather than bring it to light and give them further exposure.
Angel78 12-18-2002, 10:20 AM it looks like it was Inboxbargains, does powweb have some affiliate thing running? if not they are probably spamming themselves using differnet domain name
alphadesk 12-18-2002, 10:24 AM Yes,,PowWeb has affiliate program through cj.com. That's probably going to be where the trail will lead back to with InboxBargains.com doing the actual spamming.
Angel78 12-18-2002, 10:27 AM ok, James report it to CJ then :)
HTTPbit 12-18-2002, 11:14 AM I was reading an article in computer active (uk magazine) and spammers are now using the "net send" feature to send spam
net send? Whats that? Can you please explain or post link to that article.
Thanks.
Shikha
UH-Matt 12-18-2002, 11:16 AM its when a box pops up (like an alert box) on your desktop and its come from another computer on your network.
Spammers are using it to send to everyone connected to certain ISP's etc..
Open up a command prompt and type "net send localhost hello"
You should see what a net send looks like, if you do "net send * hello" it goes to all nodes on the network.
HTTPbit 12-18-2002, 11:28 AM I tried following commands in Command prompt (DOS) running on Windows 98 SE OS:
net send localhost hello
net send * hello
Showing following message:
The command SEND is unknown. For list of valid commands, type NET HELP at the command prompt.

UH-Matt 12-18-2002, 11:36 AM heh, maybe 98 doesnt support it.
works fine on my win2k box. I keep annoying friends on the same isp as me :)
ADEhost 12-18-2002, 11:45 AM interesting, any way to stop it from happening ?
UH-Matt 12-18-2002, 11:46 AM nope doesnt appear to be a fix for it.
ADEhost 12-18-2002, 12:28 PM thanks matt for the fast reply. If I find out anything I will be happy to report it to this thread
mike
Angel78 12-18-2002, 01:01 PM you can disable net command (i think), i red few articles about it, but as i havent got any of those spams ( just regular, "..this is not spam..." in my inbox) i havent tried it yet.
RackNine 12-18-2002, 01:29 PM Windows messaging can easil be disabled on NT/2k machines through the services panel. There are some tools that do request WM be enabled though, I'd recommend a firewall if this is the case.

jamesaspey 12-18-2002, 03:15 PM Matt i agree i shouldnt post it as its common, however i have recieved quite a bit from pow web and the fact they send it to other web hosts, well i think its rather sad and pathetic
beautiful 12-18-2002, 03:28 PM Reptilian Feline is right. This is all too common. No matter how many times i block the people who send me spam, i still get more and more.
alphadesk 12-18-2002, 03:31 PM jamesaspey,
The one you posted a screen shot of, does not appear to be coming from powweb, but another site trying to make commisions from people signing up for powweb service.
jamesaspey 12-18-2002, 03:52 PM Well i mailed um so in either case they can do what they think is necessary.
