Hi! I've written a site with C# ASP.NET for my church. The site is pretty simple and my needs are as well except for one. Weekly, I will be scp'ing the sermon file from that week to the server. I don't like having to add html every week, so I built a gridview that databinds based on ID3 Tag info on the files. In order to do this, I need net bios access to a directory worth of files. In the past, I've not found any hosting companies that allow this. Based on my research, it seems that VPS is my best option and myhosting is the most affordable. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Much,
Eric

That is because NetBIOS open on the public interface attracts hacking to the server in question of minutes, especially if it is not secured.

If you enable it, be sure to enable it only on the "Private Network" (if your host has it) and make sure the Windows Firewall blocks any external access attempt from it, allowing only your own server to access those ports.

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever (x1000) enable netbios (a.k.a. File and Print Sharing) on the "Public Network" port, i.e., the Internet-facing port.

Agreed. Netbios is a truly bad idea on a publicly available network.

Perhaps you could apply your app against a copy hosted on your own box and scp the resulting file. Or, arrange a vps with remote desktop access.

Yeah, that's how the website is designed. The local iuser needs net bios to one folder in the site only so that it can build a dataset based on the fileinfo. Scp is from the church to the website to deliver the file weekly to the site. The site itself reads the fileinfo. It would be ludicrous to allow net bios to the public. On shared hosting solutions, they won't allow NTFS rights to your own site for your iusr because they're worried about you getting to the other sites hosted there.

Not a VPS, but a cloud.
gigenetcloud.com
Windows for free for a limited time.

EDIT: Someone I know used them, it was pretty good.
