Hi WHT people. I'm in the market for a Cobalt 4 dedicated server with a nice amount of transfer/mo and a good amount of space. Can someone please provide some links for me? I've searched for a while now and im looking @ http://www.kikko.com or http://www.cobaltrack.com. tho im not sure which/if even those.

Thanks in advance! :)

You'll want to check this thread (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9551) about Kikko and http://www.cobaltracksucks.com about CobaltRacks. You should also do a search here for RackShack.net, the other low-cost RaQ provider.

From everything I've read/heard, going with a low-cost RaQ provider is a gamble with poor odds. Some people have had good luck (particularly with RackShack.net), but much of the time you're going to get poor service and/or poor performance. If you want a dedicated server for personal use, then by all means get a cheap-o, but if your business depends on it you're going to have to go with a more reliable provider. I can personally recommend Datapipe.com and DialtoneInternet.com as reliable providers.

you may also want to ensure you dont walk into www.*****.com either.

You can consult www.badwebhost.com
and a few threads here at WHT for the gossip on them.

Other than that, good luck !

thanks for the input. After reading thru these boards, it seems as if cobalts arent se great anymore lol. Now im considering Red Hat or Free BSD. Does Red Hat or Free BSD have a control panel for costumer use like teh cobalts do? and do they have a control panel for admin use, i like the cobalts becuase setting up sites is a snap, although i dont like how you have to use telnet so much...

Input would greatly help me, thx in advance!

Yeah, you wont have a problem finding a web control panel for RH, CPanel, Plesk, and many others are out there for the picking, many come preinstalled with the server.

Just ensure you dont get fobbed off with people saying their control panel doesnt work with RH7, if they do, then go elsewhere...

NO COBALTRACKS, they are soooo bad, terrible EVIL EVIL...why are you so concerned about the control panel? Just go buy a book on *nix and do it from console.

Most customers dont want to run out and grab a 30 pound book just to run their site ^_^

OK LITH OK, calm down, i know we both experienced 2 HORRIBLE days with cobaltrack

it took us a long time to get over it, but we recovered, lets not go there again, you *MAY* have a nervous breakdown. I was very close to it myself

Well, I am not sure what all these talk about cobaltracks being bad and evil. I am with them since Sept last year and still with them until today.

I have to admit that their network was slow in the beginning but things are alot better now that they are adding additional pipe to the system, upgraded my RAM from 32mb to 160mb for free and offered to upgrade my 8.4gb harddisk to a 15gb harddisk for free too. I did not take up the 15gb harddisk offer as I do not want to set everything up again. I am a newbie to Linux and my sites cannot be down.

I had Internetseer monitor the site during the last three months and it never registered any downtime, except for the days in whic they upgraded the RAM.

I usually get a response from them within 24 hours. I am more than happy with their network and level of service but I guess I am just one of the few lucky ones.:)
