View Full Version : SDSL 1.5Mbps vs. ATM T-1 ?

Dear Experts,

I appreciate all of your input on my previous posts.

Question, I'm considering adding an SDSL 1.5 Mbps connection for redundancy on my network. It's cheaper and they are darn fast since I'm extremely close to the Telco's central switch. Any ideas on how this compares to a traditional ATM T-1 in service vs. expense? Keep in mind that it's for redundancy.

I thank you in advance for your input.

Well, I'm not an expert...but I'll try anyway ;)

We have a 1.5 SDSL from Ionex as our secondary backup (yes, secondary; not primary). For the most part it's been pretty good, no major downtime that I'm aware of. When it comes to speed we usually run at about 1.1Mbps on that line. The cost is also well worth it: it costs just under 1/2 of what our regular T-1s cost. As just a backup line for a SMALL hosting company (like mine) I have no complaints.

Well, for SDSL..it takes longer to have the downtime repaired than T-1 and similar connections.

OMG - I can not believe this is up again.

SDSL and true T-1 service are no where near the same. They fall under different fedral regulations, different loop's, different QoS requirements, everything.

A true T-1 you will pay more for than DSL of any type for a reason. The speeds are more constant, and the latency is much better.

Now, using a SDSL for backup, a little risky as how often does it actually go down that you do not catch. For normal websites, it is great, but if I was a paying customer and knew that a DSL line was my backup to my business, I would be a little upset.

Well, he said secondary backup, so I imagine:

- primary line
- first backup
- secondary backup (SDSL)

I might be wrong ;) But if I'm not, I'd say it's not such a bad scenario.

Ales is right!

Line 1: one T-1 from WHC
Line 2: (Backup) one T-1 - I think the company that runs that line is SBC
Line 3: (Another Backup) T-1 over DSL from Ionex who has their own backbone (apart from SBC)

Therefore it would take two very large service providers going down before we even get to the DSL line...

How do you plan on using the DSL line as a backup? I dont think you can use portable IPs on SDSL lines. (with my ISP you cant)

Does anyone here use BGP -4 routing at your own location not a colo center?

If so who did you contact to have this setup? Read: I want a T1 from Sprint and a T1 from Qwest and I want them routed so if one goes down the other will kick in.

Just curious of any feedback who have had this setup...

Thanks

Spring and Qwest would have to help set this up for you. You would have to have it coordinated with the install. and depends on what you put on the t. Are you just using them for data, or are you going to have voice channels also ?

i have done this in my friends basement datacenter, you need a cisco 3640 and someone whose read the CCNA books...its relatively easy.

Okay what about using static IPs? How does that work? We have a C-Block from sprint supposed we have 100 domains each with its own IP that will work okay?

All ips with SDSL/T1/T3/DS3/OC lines are static...you need portable ips either from ARIN or your ISP.

By portable IP I mean an IP that can be routed to virtually any network.

Sprints IP may or may not be portable, you would need to ask them.

The way I setup my friends, he had purchased IPs from arin who supplies addresses.

Thanks! I'm calling Sprint on Monday!

By the way where are you located, just in case a *temp sys admin* project arises?:D
