Having a successful online business is no different that having a successful offline business.

You need a decent product/service, at a decent price and back it up with decent support. Also, you MUST have a solid business plan.

I've yet to hear of anyone making long-term, decent money from affiliate or MLM schemes.

What a question.. I can go on and on about this issue.. but actually it comes down to advertising, and Providing services from your site - being an ASP to other site etc.

Cheers!

And a porn site never hurts... just kidding...

It should be a quality, desirable product or service, and hopefully something no one else offers, offers with as much quality or offers at all. A service or a product that people will hopefully want, flock to and be willing to pay for. That could be almost anything, really.

Find the type of people you want to cater to, create the site for them and around the product or service. There's really no secret, just don't slap together some site that has the same thing a million other site's do, especially if the other site's offer the same or similar product or service for free. Of course, there's always taking an existing idea (in a fair way -- not blatantly trying to make money from someone else's idea, of course) and improving upon the idea, structure or product in whole.

In otherwords, simply putting up a web site or getting a business on the Internet, gives few people any more of a profit advantage, if at all -- and in fact, sometimes may be a huge disadvantage. It's all relative, it all depends. There's no set protocol or ideal, beyond the obvious.
