Hi!
I am considering the creation of a call termination service, and i would like to know some basic information.

I am new to this and maybe i have misunderstood some things, so correct me if I am wrong. This is what I have understood so far:

The local telecoms company can provide me with an ISDN PRA line which consists of 30 + 1 channels. This can provide me with 30 concurrent connections which I think is quite a lot and is going to cost a lot as well.
The other option is a ISDN BRA connection with 4 added MSN (Μultiple Subscriber Number). This way, I can have 4 concurrent connections.
4 concurrent connections is good for a start, what do u think? How many minutes will I pull through per month with 4 connections?

I am also going to need a server running ASTERISK with the proper hardware (FXO cards). Will I need any more hardware?

Finnaly, I will need an internet connection for the incoming calls. According to some googling, the bandwidth depends on codec, but the standard is 16Kb/s per call which is not going to be an issue.
Will a DSL line provide acceptable quality calls for a start or will I need a datacenter?

How can i find out about the current wholesale price for the destination I am considering to setup the service? The local voip providers sell retail at 0,019euro/min.

Thanks,
Mike

did you manage to setup ? you can use a asterisk server or a cisco with E1 cards, cisco will have better performance

If you are using ISDN then an FXO card is unsuitable and you will require an ISDN card.
Basic Rate ISDN services and Primary Rate ISDN services use different cards also. ISDN BRA services are typically two lines per service which means that for 4 concurrent calls you will need two BRA services.

Not sure where you are but here in Australia Primary Rate ISDN (PRA) services are typically sold in lots of 10, 20 or 30 concurrent calls.

I personally would recomend placing the asterisk server in a datacenter due to the redundant power and internet connections which are a LOT more reliable then a home or office based DSL service.

I 100% agree with gavo2o. Put your server in a data centre. Its just not for concurrent calls (in terms of bandwidth) but also reliability. If you are looking out for wholesale termination shop around. There are many providers around.

Just be very careful. Ask for a test account as some providers appear to be very good, but there call quality is terrible and at the end of the day that is bad for business.

Personally, i would ask your telecom company if you can connect via SIP as there termination per minute may be cheaper.

Also can you please tell me what countries you are looking at termination to? Most of Europe you will be looking at between £0.004 - £0.008 per minute at wholesale on a 1/1 basis.

Kind Regards,

Need more info:

Are you trying to originate or terminate ?

1. If you want to use your 30 or 4 lines and setup a calling card type service, then its origination.

2. If you want other companies to send calls to you that will be connected via your lines, its termination.

3. If you can tell where you are from and how you want to setup, I can pass you the quick rates that is in the market now. That will help you work out your profit and cost calculation.

4 lines would be good for testing, but you need more lines in termination. If your price is good (even 0.005) less than market, and quality is good, then you will have no issues upgrading to hundreds of ports.

DSl line is not an option for reliable service.
