View Full Version : Should I just turn WHT off??
I don't know how you plan your daily work schedules, but every morning I get up and make a "to do" list for the day. As I go through the day, I check each one off as it's completed. Lately, I rarely get through the entire list.
One of the reasons for this is that I always have WHT open in a browser. I find that if I take on a task that would take, let's say, 2 hours to complete, it ends up being more like 4-5 hours because I get distracted with replies to subscribed threads, and then taking a peek at any new threads.
Although relative to many of you, my knowledge of web hosting/servers/programming is limited, 90% of what I've learned about this industry in the last 12 months has been a direct result of my visits to WHT. So there's no denying this place is an amazing learning resource.
Question is, should I just close the damned browser, concentrate on my task at hand, then come to WHT and enjoy uninterrupted time here?
How do you do it?
Vito
Chicken 12-16-2002, 11:39 PM Well, let's see... I've been working on a couple of sites for ohhhhhh 2 years now, and as you can see, I'm currently distracted at this very moment. So I'm nt the right person to ask.
theqase 12-16-2002, 11:41 PM dont close the window, you will end up opening it back up in no time... i have the same problem...
do you ever get to the point where you feel like there is no other sites than wht?
TemplateGuy 12-16-2002, 11:42 PM Well heres what I do...
1). Check in the morning
2). Check at lunch
3). 3PM -4PM PST, give a lecture to all those who are asking for templates at $40
4). 5PM PST - 6PM PST join the webhosting talk lounge
5). Then recheck all threads I replied to.
As you can see you have 2 hours free.
:)
Its called Time Managment, And DON'T EVER TURN THAT BROWSER OF. What would we do without you Vito ;)
NexgenServer 12-16-2002, 11:44 PM Plus, If you turn the browser off, it will take MORE TIME to get it back open when your urge is to strong to fight :)
As far as I'm concerned, Chicken is the Master Multi-Tasker. I'll never understand how he does it. He's a teacher full time (I think that's what I read somewhere), he's a mod in God knows how many forums, I don't know how he can be in so many places at once.
I picture this demonic wizard sitting in front of a wall of computer monitors as he scans each one for the next member to keep in line, the next IP to trace, the next thread to close, the next argument to pacify. Kinda like watching Edward Scissorhands working...

TemplateGuy 12-17-2002, 12:03 AM Good description Vito, I always saw him as a person who never shaved and had a setup like the guy in the movie "SwordFish".
:)
We should start a thread on this..

Could you imagine having *that* setup in *that* house with Halle Berry to boot? :pimp:'in
AntiSpamHosts 12-17-2002, 12:45 AM adding it as 127.0.0.1 would make it unaccessable to you..
Although you could delete it right back.
iamdave 12-17-2002, 12:59 AM You can't! It's an addiction.;)

That would solve the problem allright, if she was in MY house like that I'd NEVER EVER be on WHT again, well, maybe once in a while to GLOAT like a PIG.
ServerSonic 12-17-2002, 01:08 AM WHT is the most antiproductive website on the internet. I should be working on MY todo list right now. Argh!
insaneraptor 12-17-2002, 01:50 AM Im addicted. I dont post much i just read though :)
TheDoctor 12-17-2002, 02:58 AM Vito
Your approaching the problem from the wrong direction. Instead of turning wht off you need to modify your "things to do list" or better still throw it away and just let things happen.
When I am about to go to bed at the end of the day I ask myself "did I accomplish anything to day"? if I am able to answer yes then I've had a productive day. Now it doesn't matter what it was that I managed to do, even if it was just putting out the garbage bin for the truck ..then I am ahead. The rest I can do "Tomorrow"
As for the picture of the "mad scientist" looks a bit like a lady I went out with a few times.

maybe i'll post my todo list in a thread so I'll take time to read it :(
Acroplex 12-17-2002, 03:34 AM Ars longa, vita brevis :D
JustinH 12-17-2002, 04:57 AM I also question how Chicken could possibly do this. I figure one of the following
(1) He can type with his mind
(2) There are a plethera of chickens (clones, coops with ISDN maybe?)
(3) He hands out "pop quizes" everyday and sits in front of the 'puter.
(4) He's actually a modified version of the Honda robot.
Darth 12-17-2002, 05:10 AM I'm going to take WHT to court and sue them for destroying my life. If anyone else is interested please contact me :)
TheDoctor 12-17-2002, 05:10 AM I also question how Chicken could possibly do this
I seem to remember being told chicken was Australian, if this is so then that would explain it.
Oy Oy Oy aussie aussie aussie.
Doc
JustinH 12-17-2002, 05:45 AM I'm assuming you're joking since it's pretty well known Chicken is a teacher here in the States. However, I would like to comment, you Aussie's are pretty derned full of yourselves aren't you?

I didn't say he lived in Australia I just said he maybe Australian, I seem to remember him telling me he was but I'm not absolutely certain.
Oh and on behalf of my fellow Australian thank you for the complement, said like a true gentleman I'm sure.
Doc
btw I couldn't find the word "derned" in my dictionary.
ho247 12-17-2002, 06:46 AM Instead of being distracted all the time by coming here, why not slot WHT into your to-do list between several other tashks, so then you do a few tasks then you're rewarded by having the next task of coming here, then do another few tasks etc. This might work :).
Alan
Geeeez, I really have to pick up and move to Aussie-Land. If just taking out the garbage would suffice for a day's work, I've got to get a taste of that lifestyle. Warm climes, no snow, attractive women, laid back approach to life... ahhhhhhhhh...
Hmm. So build WHT right into my to-do list? Let's see how that works...
6:00 AM - Check email
6:15 AM - Check new WHT posts
6:30 AM - Forward any new orders to production staff
6:45 AM - Check new WHT posts
7:00 AM - Start new thread asking how to read mail in SSH
7:10 AM - Stare at my to-do list
7:15 AM - Thank Monte for a quick reply to my thread
7:20 AM - Follow timechange around to get a chuckle from his posts
9:20 AM - Still following...
12:00 Noon - Lunch
1:00 PM - Stare at to-do list
1:10 PM - Grab popcorn and watch a Timmay or Nocsol thread unfold
6:00 PM - Re-do the to-do list for the next day
7:00 PM - Take out the garbage
Umm, yah, that could work...
Oh, and timechange, at least this time you didn't say Ars longa, vito brevis.
Vito
JustinH 12-17-2002, 04:45 PM Yes derned is only located in the Northwest region of th United States, there are several other words as well:
What'd ya do thet fer
Is an example of a spoken sentence up here.

I dunno - you've already got the whole morning block 7:20 to Noon. But OK, I'll pencil you in and see how it goes...;)
Vito
TemplateGuy 12-17-2002, 09:16 PM Hmm.. timechange seems pretty popular.. maybe I should follow him around? I could use a good laugh in the morning :D
Acroplex 12-17-2002, 09:18 PM That's why I post at 3am, so that you have your laughter fresh in the morning :D
timechange = quick wit and reparte = good belly laugh :emlaugh:
