View Full Version : looking for cheap dns solution
SirMarcel 08-02-2010, 01:57 PM I have couple VPSs and instead of using private nameservers, I am looking for a DNS cluster provider, preferably one which will offer free initial configuration for couple domains
I need at least two servers, one in US and another one in EU (UK/FR preferably)
don't need a cPanel (as it usually means higher prices)
xtrac568 08-02-2010, 10:12 PM First ask your vps provider, it might be that they will host your domains on their dns cluster for free (because many providers do so).
If not, see, dnsmadeeasy.com
MikeTrike 08-02-2010, 10:15 PM cPanel DNS only is free and you can install it on any VPS. Runs fine on 128MB if you just wanted to grab a couple of budget VPS's from random providers around the globe.

only in case there's already some VPSs powered by full-cpanel installation, as you cannot manage dns records on Cpanel Dns Only itself, you have to do it from full-cpanel which is a part of cpanel dns only cluster.
So, it is free, but only if you already have some cpanel (nonfree) servers.

Right, I made the assumption that he was using cPanel. Was waiting for a chime in...
Maximus P 08-02-2010, 11:41 PM There are several option for DNS Solution as others have said , check with your hosting provider we are sure they offer this service too, or else you could always search here on WHT or google for more infos
Cyborg-- 08-03-2010, 08:58 AM I can recommend dnsmadeeasy.com i've been using them for a long time. Price is lower then a vps, and latency is extremely low.
SirMarcel 08-03-2010, 02:59 PM thanks for all the answers, I will try dnsmadeeasy.com, it seems the first 3 domains are free with them

Have you checked Hurricane Electric's free dns service? (http://dns.he.net)
They've servers on US and Europe, on their own network.
For a low latency solution I recommend dnsmadeeasy since they're using anycast.
Guspaz 08-06-2010, 11:38 AM Linode offers nodes in both the US (4 DCs) and UK (1 DC), and has five DNS servers that are free to use for customers... Is that what you're looking for?
DNS hosting is pretty much cheap-as-free these days. Registrars seem to all give it away for free with registrations, hosts all seem to give it away free with hosting...
SirMarcel 08-06-2010, 11:43 AM I have another question: I am setting up small hosting on a VPS
what would be the best setup for me to offer my customers private DNSs?

Thanks! I've just found a good DNS provider atlast (PointHQ):)
NuCode 08-06-2010, 06:59 PM Most hosting services come with DNS offers which are plenty :) Just use "add domain" in cpanel and configure zones manually (might need reseller privs) if in question is cpanel hosting.
There are many DNS services as well, highest quality but outrageous pricing is Dyndns.net, then there is small ones like editdns.net which are very affordable, but amateurish and suck (in case of editdns, there was huge gaps in security i reported to them, but their reply was "doesn't matter, is not a security issue", despite i showed 2 potential basic attack vectors for them)
Do your research on the service you will choose and you are fine :) Larger provider is the way to go, and if you look carefully you might get something else on the price too you need ;)
SirMarcel 08-06-2010, 07:01 PM I have already picked something.
that's the current question:

NuCode 08-06-2010, 07:06 PM DNS server unique IPs they use, set reverses and DNS to that, for full private/masked.
Other than that, semi masked/private is just pointing DNS.
If you want them a control panel ... That's a bit harder thing to do
SirMarcel 08-06-2010, 07:07 PM sorry but your answer doesn't make too much sense to me

Yeah that is quite incomprehensible. Guess i were quite tired at the time.
Something about masking/private DNS (IP reverses too or just point to the IPs, semi-masked private DNS).
and offering control panel to end users requires a bit of work :)
1 up for DNSMadeEasy. Used them for years also (but still do my own secondary...just in case). DNS Failover works great every time. Never had an issue in over 1/2 decade.
