Backup Service is the big thing now that I see everybody is doing it

I think it's very important, as the data you collect is most likely also very important to you. Otherwise why would you be collecting it in the first place. So yes back ups all the way.

Backups are very important.
Features.... browser based backup/restore is enough.

As far as starting a backup service goes, you would need to have some type of an edge over your competition as there are already quite a few established players in this field.

If he can find a niche, why not? I recently discovered a backup service provider for gameserver config files. They seem to be in the business pretty long and as long as the OP finds a niche like that his business should be successful(with the right business plan).

I use a vps to remote backup all my important files with cron.
I don't like using backups services, I prefer doing it myself, and it's cheaper this way + I can use that vps for anything else I want.
These days, you can get 50GB HDD space in a vps for 10$ and some times for less than 10$.

Edit/ to answer your questions:
1 - The most important thing in webhosting, without it, you are putting your business on the line.
2 - HDD space of course.
3 - Daily.
4 - I use the old school way which comes as an internal application with direct admin or cpanel, which is remote backup features with cron.

--- Very important. We have had two clients who's servers have "melted" before, cooking their main drive AND their backup drive. One client had remote backups, the other didn't. The former client saved $75,000 a year worth of clients. The latter had to close down shop. Taking that into consideration, remote backups are really the cheapest and most effective insurance policy.

--- Speed. Rsync/SSH access is absolutely necessary.
