View Full Version : Reseller chains - good or bad?

Hi everyone,

I'm just wondering, is the ability to let resellers create resellers a wise idea? Lots of people ask for it in a control panel yet no major CP that I know of supports it.

In my mind I think having such a feature is a bad idea, you're creating a chain much like Enom did with their domain system and they faced huge support problems because of it.

Also, I can imagine a lot of resellers will oversell their resources, if overselling occurs in a chain, with every reseller overselling just a little bit more...

And surely, this will lead to a less competitive market? If everyone in a chain of resellers has to make a small margin for themselves the end user will have to pay significantly more than if they went to a reseller direct.

Then again.... lots of people ask for it to be supported, so I can imagine any CP offering it would be desireable....

What does everyone think?!?

I feel inclined to agree, projects like this tend to expand exponentially and can become very hard to control very quickly.

i think is a posibility, and good. But the control panel has to have a way to limit the numer of resellers, or the number of chains a reseller account can create.

Reseller Chains .... is a topic wevery web hoster thinks of in the start . Although it looks all bright and sunny as an idea ... but the pyramidical structure never is good in Controlling. You know that you can check your resellers wether they are storing illegal softwares , pornorgraphy(as per your law) . But what about your resellers reseller ? It all depends on how many customers your and your resellers have , how strict and vigilant are they .

I tend to agree with all posts so far, I should let you know the question being asked is whether or not it is important to have such a feature in a control panel, not whether web hosts should do it.

I like the idea of having a limit on the number of resellers in a chain... It is something I will give more thought to.

At the moment our software supports chaining of resellers with 80% of the functions, the only question here is whether or not it should be made available to web hosts or not.

I know, if I were looking for somewhere to host my site I would be instinctively weary about going with a reseller, if that reseller was in a chain I'd probably avoid that reseller altogether.

In my opinion, resellers should not be allowed to add resellers. This will make it very complicated.

Hmm.. I think for now we're gonna just leave it. The reaction seems fairly mixed and I'm not a big fan of the idea.

If demand changes then at least most of the hard work has been done, it will be very easy to add the feature.

Thanks for the comments everyone - I have a lot more questions to ask before I show of screen shots of my beauty ;)
