View Full Version : .NET, mysql hosting for a student with no money
nasanu 07-31-2010, 08:06 AM Hi,
I have a couple of sites hosted with ************ and they are constantly down (they are down right now with a 'Service Unavailable' error).
I really dont have much cash to spend, but I'd at the very lest want users to be able to visit my sites. I need .NET and mySQL. Come november I expect a large traffic increase to one site, no idea how big though.
My budget would be less than $200US a year, cheaper the better. What hosts should I be considering? Is it just that all budget hosts are crap?
Ixape 07-31-2010, 09:32 AM Site5 LLC should be able to provide what you nee. Get in touch with them.
zomex 07-31-2010, 11:53 AM That fact that their domain name is blocked on this forum can't be a good thing.
A budget of $200/year isn't too bad. I'm sure you will be able to find a reliable provider in the offers section.
Regards,
Jack

Are you sure that they offer ASP .NET?

I couldn't see any mention of ASP.NET hosting support on their website..
We don't offer Windows hosting at this time.
Good luck with your host search, nasanu!
MikeDVB 07-31-2010, 03:14 PM For ASP.net I'd suggest looking at CrystalTech.com - I hosted with them a couple of years ago for a few projects and their servers and support were excellent. I'm sure things are still just as good if not better now and they do have some affordable plans that should fit your needs.

Oh my bad - Didn't realise he wanted ASP.NET
nasanu 08-01-2010, 11:09 AM Thanks guys, CrystalTech.com looks good. Their 'Business Expansion' plan would suit me well.

I noticed that, thought it was really strange. I did a search and they have been banned since '08, could not find out why though. Would be nice if new users searching these forums could be told which web host to avoid 4 life.

That's the symptom of application pool crashed.
You should check out offer forum (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4) for special discount.

Thanks for the recommendation -- greatly appreciated.

I would suggest checking out some of the new Microsoft beta programs. MS is working with hosts to provide free hosting in promoting new initiatives. One example is the new WebMatrix Beta (http://www.microsoft.com/web/webmatrix/learn/). I think there will be some additional programs in the near future, so keep an eye out and check sites like IIS.net and ASP.net regularly.
Good luck -

nasanu 08-21-2010, 03:35 AM I decided to go with Appliedi, but their terms and conditions are worrying.
This sounds horrid:
"It is your obligation to monitor the use of the Services to ensure that there are not unusual spikes and peaks in your bandwidth or disk usage. Should your use of our network and/or products exceed the limits described above, you will incur additional charges for that use. These charges will apply regardless of whether you initiated the additional use, or it was caused by a third party."
So does that mean I will receive a bill if I go over my bandwidth quota? Will I get a bill for too much CPU usage? And what rates are these extra charges calculated at? Why cant my site just be disabled if it uses too much resources?

If you don't like the sounds of any particular terms of service you should move on and look some more. Arguing with them about it later is a pain. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
In both real life and online, let your money do the voting when it comes to terms that you find unreasonable. It is your civic duty as a responsible consumer.
OnlineRack 08-23-2010, 01:43 AM how much bandwidth and disk space do you expect to use?
Do you have just one domain or more than one?
Just trying to find out what your requirements are just in case.

Not really sure how much I'll use. Right now I am using very little, but come November I will get a large increase in traffic. But exactly how large is anyone's guess. I've no clue.
But its a moot point now, I've signed up with Appliedi. I am just going to carefully monitor my bandwidth. I think you get setup a warning message if you get near the limit, though I haven't figured out how to do that yet.

Totally agree with you, Crystaltech is good indeed. You can see more of their shared plans here: crystaltech.com/dotnet.aspx for ASP.NET plans and try their .NET Value for around 8 dollars per month. You can always upgrade it later.
