View Full Version : UnitedColo doesn't know how to FSCK?
HostInspect 12-16-2002, 12:50 AM I have a test server with UC mainly for shoutcast, and they unplugged it by mistake. I sent a reboot request... look what I got:
Bad news. Your server was turned back on and here's the error messages we see on the console --
/dev/hda3 contains a file system with errors, checked forced.
/dev/hda3: Inode 12 has illegal block(s).
/dev/hda3: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; run FSCK manually. [FAILED]
*** An error occurreed during the file system check.
*** Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
*** when you leav the shell.
We've already rebooted your server twice and it's still showing the same errors. Unfortunately, the weekend crew can only provide manual reboot. We'll ask an engineer to fix this problem for you tomorrow morning.
 What kind of DC is this?
What a joke.
mushrew 12-16-2002, 01:04 AM the crew on hand on weekends only handles sales. if your server goes kaput, you're outta luck.
clocker1996 12-16-2002, 01:25 AM lol tell them how to run it.

You're kidding, right.
mushrew 12-16-2002, 01:30 AM nope. asked them if they could setup my server today (sunday) mentioning that i pay them over a thousand dollars a month. said they would if they could but no engineers around
eddy2099 12-16-2002, 01:45 AM Shouldn't it be the other way round ? Like the Tech support team should be the one which runs 7 days a week but the Sales department can run Mon to Fri.
What's the point having a sales team over the weekend if they cannot setup the server for you or fix any problems if the server fails.
Hostkookster 12-16-2002, 02:00 AM So much for the 24 x 7 tech support they advertise on their site. :D What a joke.
This ruins all faith I had that they were improving. I'll never rent a box there now.
mushrew 12-16-2002, 02:08 AM From my talks with 3 providers within UnitedColo's datacenter, their provider, digital wireworks, is comparable in price with Cogent. One guy told me 25/mbit for 50mbit+. Atrivo (atrivo.com but he stil hasn't built up his website in over a year. search for him on WHT for more info on his old cogent offerings) will do 1800XP+, 1024MB ram and 1000GB transfer for about half of what I'm paying for the P4 2GHz at UnitedColo. I'm just waiting until January when he'll be purchasing more rackspace since he recently had a big sale and is out. With the amount of money I'm spending at UnitedColo, I might as well pick up my own 50mbit he.net/internap mix :D (would be same price for the line alone, i don't know how much colo fees are at paul ave.)
Hostkookster 12-16-2002, 02:20 AM What's their network like (digital wireworks) - i've never heard of them.
Its a shame he hasn't built up his site - its very nice.
mushrew 12-16-2002, 02:24 AM That's what UnitedColo uses but is ditching unless you have 20Mbit or more ordered. They're putting regular customers on Williams now. From what i've gathered, they purchase Hurricane Electric and Internap bandwidth in massive amounts and are thus able to resell the two BGP-4 mixed together at a very cheap price. Great bandwidth, cheap price.
mushrew 12-16-2002, 02:26 AM He only put that design up recently. Atrivo.com used to be a webdesign service. While he sold servers through the name Atrivo, he never actually offered them on the website - everything was through word of mouth (how I found out about him.) There was a lot of talk about him a long time ago when zdwebhosting brought him up in a post one time.
Hostkookster 12-16-2002, 02:42 AM Ah ok. I figured the site was a year old - and I was thinking damn he's a design genious if he came up with that a year ago :D
silversurfer 12-16-2002, 03:09 AM F*CK? I am sure they do... just kidding :)
FSCK.... You can email them the instructions. But don't expect them to take any responsibility if they screw up.

Lol. Just be glad you're not one of the morons paying $1000/mo or more to ucg.
freakysid 12-16-2002, 10:05 AM Funny that - their accounts department manages to charge credit cards on the weekend, and take customers' servers offline - they seem to know how to do that.
seg fault 12-16-2002, 11:39 AM *chuckle* that's rather ridiculous
as silversurfer said, email them or tell them the instructions over the phone - can't see why they wouldn't do it since they are happy to reboot and let you know the errors
*shrugs*
