From Evan..

"We got back to our room at Four Seasons last night around 1am and opened the door to our room to find a fake security camera sitting on the desk facing the front of the room and a box from some company called "Volance". We immediately called the front desk and they knew nothing of it. They sent the security manager up and he scanned our keycard input on our door. He eventually discoverred that the bell hop was handing these devices out as a gag for the HostingCon rooms. The scary part was that we had an unmistakenly clear Do Not Disturb card on our door. The security manager thinks the bellhop may have just missed it. The even weirder part is that the box that was left with the plastic camera has large text that reads like so:

"If we can do this to the good guys, imagine what we know about the bad guys".

Sounds like a white hat hacker type way of advertising to me. Who else got this thing? It is a bit disturbing about the hotel security fail but I am quite curious. Certainly was an effective way of getting the brand "Volance" in my brain!!"

Saw that. Just not too pleased about the do not disturb sign being ignored by the bell hop. Also I don't get what the slogan means "If we can do this to the good guys.. etc" unless it was somehow an unauthorized entry into the room..

Anything missing from the room? Idk about you, however, if the hotel was complacent or assisted in the act of violating my privacy in that way, I certainly wouldn't stay there again. An if a bellhop was going room to room dropping these off and didn't get caught until you reported it, I would consider it a security fail.

They knocked on my door when I happened to be in my room. I was handed the camera and bewildered to why the box had that motto. Now I know why :P.

All I can say is that Evan was not too pleased. He mentioned that he would leave if it weren't for the hassle involved. There was nothing else touched or missing in the room.

Same here at the Courtyard Marriott. Kind of annoying but not entirely surprising at a tech event.

Avoid using the convention rate and your room won't be associated with advertising, etc.

Well when conventions go on like Hosting Con many people feel the need to get there name out there anyway they can. I wonder how much they spent doing this?
