View Full Version : Recommend a free bulletin board (PHP)
BRossMac 04-25-2001, 03:13 PM Can anybody recommend a good FREE PHP bulletin board/forum component? I used Snitz forum on my NT site but my new host doesn't support it. Any good PHP ones that you can recommend?
I'm brand new to scripting and I found Snitz really easy to use and set up. I'd like something similar. Sample sites are especially helpful.

I'll second phpBB - new version 1.4.0 looks very, very good and speed is up about 10% on my site.
Other good forums to consider -

BRossMac 04-26-2001, 09:57 AM Well I downloaded PHPBB, but I don't know how to extract the files from the .tar file....
Any hints?
(The phpbb.com site is down because of maxed bandwidth or I'd seek an answer there.)
Brad
kunal 04-26-2001, 11:21 AM use winzip...
BRossMac 04-26-2001, 11:45 AM No can do. All of my file extraction software tries to CREATE an archive when I try to open a TAR file no matter how I try to do it....
Brad
:(
kunal 04-26-2001, 11:51 AM so why dunt you let it create a archive? :)

version 1.4.0? Hm... a new one eh? Any site using it, BC? I tried to go see it at phpBB.com, but too bad these guys have gone their bandwith limit for this month :) Will come back later, but in the meantime if you can show me which sites use phpBB 1.4.0...
cheers,
BRossMac 04-26-2001, 01:04 PM When it creates a new archive it takes the TAR file and puts it in a new ZIP archive, just like the one I extracted it from. I want to extract the files from the TAR file but nothing I do works...!

Dektong,
I'll re-upgrade to 1.4.0 later today on my site and let you have a good look at it (I tried 1.4.0 on my spare box at home so I'll do it live later).
Brad,
If you are getting the 'create an archive' instead of 'extracting' an archive, then it is 95% possible the file became corrupted when downloading to your computer. You'll need a fresh copy.
The main phpBB site is back up, so you can try their forums for any questions. These are the two links provided for download :
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/phpbb/phpBB-1.4.0.tar.gz (SourceForge)
http://www.phpbb.com/download/phpBB-1.4.0.tar.gz (IntraHost, where phpBB is hosted)
If you are *still* having any troubles with corrupted downloads give me a yell and I'll place the gZipped file on my server for you to try and download.
DigitalXWeb 04-26-2001, 09:09 PM Brad,
Try using WINRAR. It will unpack almost all compressed archive formats. I have not used winzip in quite awhile so it may also do the same but if I recall you have to go into the preferences and select the archive format TAR so it will know to unpack it.
Good Luck!!
BRossMac 04-26-2001, 09:12 PM I considered replying as a private message, but maybe others can benefit from my stupidity....
I should start out by saying that I am downloading this onto a WIN98 PC. When I open the original file, there is a file inside with the same name. When I try to open that file with WinZip it attempts to zip it.
I have a feeling that I must be doing something wrong. Points go to whoever can tell me what it is without making me feel like a total moron. Half points if you just make me feel like a dope.... :stickout
Brad
BRossMac 04-26-2001, 09:15 PM P.S. I tried WINRAR. No deal.
Also, the same thing happens with other TAR files. So I'm figuring it's a system thing....
Brad, no : it has happened to me before, and it simply is corruption of the file. Because of the corruption, WinZip can't recognise the correct format.
dektong 04-26-2001, 09:31 PM I don't really see the difference between version 1.2.1 and version 1.4.0 ... so BC... what are the improvements in the 1.4.0 version?
BRossMac, if you want to use 1.2.1, let me know... I have the file ready to be untar-red... You can download it from my site. Yea, it's quite possible that the file is corrupted. I remember having a hard time trying to untar it, then I downloaded from somewhere else and 'tar -zxvf' worked....
cheers,
BRossMac 04-27-2001, 10:52 PM Well, I upgraded to WinZip 8 and it worked. I don't know if 7 didn't support TAR or if my copy of 7 was corrupted, but I have opened the archives. Now it's "Look out world!"
Thanks for the help and recommendations folks.
Brad
:D
webfors 04-29-2001, 09:21 AM yep, phpBB 1.4 is a definite improvement over version 1 and 1.2 and it's extremely fast :)

I use phpbb but YapBB (http://yapbb.sourceforge.net) is good too.
avara 05-02-2001, 08:11 AM Does it really have to be a PHP script, or can it be written in Perl as well? If not, why is PHP so vital?
webfors 05-02-2001, 08:19 AM PHP is much faster when compared to Perl, AND it uses much less resources. Then add zend optimizer and php is untouchable with regards to speed. You cannot get a faster combo than PHP/Mysql.
BRossMac 05-02-2001, 06:55 PM I was basically looking for a replacement for an ASP forum I was using. I've tested a few that were recommended: PHPBB, XMB, T-forums. I have to say that PHPBB leaves me completely underwhelmed. It seems kind of klunky and difficuly to customize well (for a newbie to scripting anyway...).
I don't need anything right away. It's for a project I have in mind. So I might take my time and see what else is out there. Once the project gets going (and $ starts coming in (!?!?)) I may upgrade to vBulletin....

Thanks,
Well, it was my first experience with installing, customizing and administering a script. I thought it was great! I liked the customizablity of it as well as the pretty thorough admin panel.
I only had it up for a few weeks. (I was hosting with Tacid, but left because of all the problems there.) So, sadly you can't see my work. But go to the Snitz site and you can find links to other sites using their forum.
