View Full Version : WinXP Desktop Won't Load

Can someone help me out here? Alright here is the problem.

I had a problem with my computer (It Froze) so I did a manual reboot and WinXP came up and said that there was a registry error, but it had recovered and it needed to restart. I restarted it and waiting for the login box to open. When it did, I logged in and then the problems began.

Apparently, the only thing that loads is the DeskTop Background, however if I hit Ctrl ALT DEL, I can pull up the task manager dialogue and I can manually run programs from there.

Can someone help me out? All the data is there. It just won't open the desktop.

Anyone have this problem before? Any solutions?

Can you start the computer in safe mode

I can't get that option. It just loads regular into Normal mode and nothing else loads after login.

It seems that everything else works though. When I start programs manually, I can use them fine. I am on it right now with IE started.

Anything else?

So you're saying when you go into safe mode you still do not have a desktop?

I had this problem briefly the other day and Im trying to remember what I did to fix it.

If you go into task manager and run "explorer.exe", does your desktop etc. load?

hmm.. when the comp starts up... go into the Task manager go create a new task and start C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe :)

Try reinstalling your video drivers, or removing them in safe mode and restarting.

Auto detect should find them again.

This is what was wrong with one of the systems here the other day I believe, hard to keep track which ms os is doing what.

Alright, Windows was being a pain before so I booted into Redhat. Let me shutdown and startup windows again.

I will let you know.

Thanks

Does winXP still uses that shell entry
SHELL=expolorer.exe in system.ini,
or similar (SHELL=progman.exe, yeah).

If so maybe it got replaced with something else

Well, I am back in windows. And I tried to do what you said. (Start Explorer Manually) but when I do, I look in the processes box of task manager and Explorer.EXE apears for a second and then disapears.

Maybe something is stoping explorer from loading?

Thanks

Do you run a virus scanner and is it up to date with the latest virus definitions list?

I run Norton and it should be up to date. I think Live Update ran a few days ago.

Any suggestions?

Did you remove the vid drivers?

Search google for a program called bootvis.exe, it will allow you to see what is happening.

I just tried BootVis (I already had it installed) but it didn't work after the reboot. The strange thing now is that I can hear the IM Messages Sound from AIM. So I think it may have something to do with the vid drivers now. How can I remove them though? I am only limited to the power of Task Manager Run....

Boot up the system and press the F8 key over and over (While watching POST (Black and White screen)

You will see options for booting into safe mode.

Once in there you should be able to remove the drivers.

This is either a vid display problem, or a profile corruption problem.

Probally related to it remembering the last person logged on and loading (Preemptively) the last user settings.

Alright, well I tried to boot into Safe Mode, but the computer froze half way towards the boot and then rebooted itself 60 seconds after. So I am out in the dark here. Anyone have any ideas?

Are you overclocked at all?

Please post your memory specs, amount, type, 1 2 3 4 sticks etc

My CPU was overclocked. Thats why it frozed, but I put it back down to normal. I think my Vid Card is overclocked too. I don't remember correctly.

Is there a way for me to remove my Vid Drivers in the situation that I am in?

Thanks

You need to get into safe mode, and if your freezing was related to the overclocking, I am not suprised, but you're not freezing now right? Try to get into Safe Mode, then you can do what you need to.

Here is a bit of info
http://www.theeldergeek.com/repairing_windows_xp.htm

Have you tried rochen's comment about running explorer manually? Or did you and that is when you saw it crash again.

I think opengl is crashing on your system and taking explorer down, have you recently updated Directx? Can you get to cmd and run dxdiag?

I think I can get into safe mode if I can turn down my resolution to 800x600? Is there any way to do this? I tried the normal way but I can't right click.

I tried running Explorer, It just starts for 1 second and then ends. (According to the System Process Window)

See if there are any errors

Neo3Net
12-14-2002, 09:43 PM
Direct3D test results: Failure at step 32 (User verification of Direct3D 7 rendering): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)

Those are the errors under Display.

I was looking for a way to get around installing XP again. Is there a way to change screen resolution without going into the right click properties menu on the desktop? If I can change to 800x600 I can fix the problem

Hmm... I just got XP on my computer today (new computer) so i may be wrong with this..

run sysdm.cpl to open the system properties, or just run desk.cpl to load the display properties.
