Hi,

I have a question that might be crazy, but hey we are out of ideas now! :)

Can I rent a dedi server and share the space with 2-3 other webmasters? We would then use one server and each run our site on the server...is this possible? I think some dedi come with several IP's right?

Any tips would be great because we have a lot of issues right now.

Oh! we are looking for these:

-ColdFusion with SQL Server 7 or 2000.
-at least 800Mb space and 15Gb bandwith.
-at least 5 SQL databases.
-Able to run 3-4 separate sites on one server.

Cheers!

That's not as crazy as you think. Every now and then, someone posts here looking for someone to share a server with. If you can find a couple of cyber roommates, you can get the benefits of a dedicated server without having to foot the entire cost.

There are some potential problems, though. Each person may want root access. That's understandable, especially if costs are split evenly. However, the adage of "too many cooks spoil the broth" is relevant here. Each person making root level changes they like can cause problems for all, even incapacitating the server.

Even splitting the cost evenly, it would be wise to limit root access to one person (ostensibly the most capable technologically) and have that person coordinate any required changes.

You don't need several IP addresses either. A single one can suffice for all domains involved in most cases.

Great thanks! Because getting 3 accounts at 30-50$ each per month makes the total to 100-150$ for myself so I wouldn't mind paying the same but have all sites residing on one dedi server and share it with other mates. :)

Cheers!
