View Full Version : Dedicated Server Setup Averages
XTStrike 04-25-2001, 06:20 AM I thought i would start a topic on the time it takes ISP's to setup various dedicated server packages.
Im fairly sure most people in here have dedicated servers of some sort be it actual machines or RaQ boxes, as some people actually base the quality of the ISP on the speed of setup etc...
Now we have the various problems of this, as specification greatly depends on configuration time, so postings of Drives, Ram, Processors, Additional Software would be good.
Also remembering RaQ servers will have their own category and therefore will be analysed seperately in this test.
I will post stats tomorrow or the day after summarizing the various responses. (if there are enough responses)
If a post already exists for a particular ISP, please post your own setup time, as averages can be gathered from these responses.
The clock starts the moment you send the ISP your credit card number, and the clock stops the moment you are capable of telnetting/SSH into the server and "su" to root successfully.
Let me start with the only two hosts I am aware of and the time to configure. I will add WeinBar the moment i have the IP and root password.

took me 6-7 business days to get my server setup at Ventures Online. (their policy is 5-7 business days)
I think I could have got it a bit sooner, if it wasnt for the Easter vacation interruption and upgrades at VDI being of higher priority. (VO out of their own initiative credited me $100 back of the setup fee).
As I was in a rush to get the server, they didnt get a chance to update the kernel to 2.2.19, however i just submitted a request and it was done within 1 day at no extra charge
It was well worth the wait in the end, great support :D
Thats two thumbs up for VO from me

And that we feel is actually slow for us....
We had some bad hardware shipments and some backorders recently, that caused delays in this weeks server setups...
Usually we strive for 24-72 hour setup times for dedicated servers...possibly even same day setup if all hardware is in stock.
There actually have been times when new clients call us up and says it is an absolute emergency that they need a server set up today, and we didn't have all the parts needed in stock. We physically drive down to our distributor's (Ingram Micro) warehouse 1:15 hours away and picked up the parts needed in such cases.

Deb Suran 05-19-2001, 01:00 PM I don't see this as an issue. For me, the issue is whether or not the host sets up the dedicated server in the time stated. If they do, no problem. I *would* be a tad concerned if they said it would take them 10-14 days, unless I needed some unusual hardware it would take them some time to locate. I've got a dedicated server at QWK.net, and they set it up within the timeframe Travis quoted me via e-mail. I don't even remember what that was, but it was less than a week. That was all I cared about.
