i am looking for webased email script written in php(no mysql) for some of my sites and hosting purposes.

it would be great if i can use both pop3 and webased email, which means the users can either check their emails through webased email or pop3. it would be better if i dont have to install the script for all the websites, which means only one install and all my sites and users can use the webased email. after installing the script, e.g. 111@aaa.com, 222@bbb.com, 333@ccc.com and when i added new users/sites in the raq3 control panel, they will automatically able to use the webased email.

i have found several good email scripts(i suppose) at hotscripts.com and they are :

http://www.cushman.net/projects/aeromail/index.php (sinple and easy to use)

http://www.kmmail.org/ (looks really good and simple to use)

what you think about the scripts stated above? have you tried them on a raq3 server before? and will they satisfy the requirements stated above?

thanks in advance for your help.

I recall reading somewhere (I think it was the neomail website) that when you move to a lot of users (1000+????), it gets very slow as it uses text files rather than a database.

So I would think mysql is actually a good thing.

Talking about neomail, we've got a question:
we have it on cpanel3 and got to move an account who has >200 mail addresses.
What do you think would be the better way to do it without loosing preferences and mailboxes contents?
Should customer create again any mail address and then paste by telnet or ftp its mailboxes contents?

thank you

I too am curious to the innerworkings of cpanel's cpop system. As such i would be weary of trying to import a clients email accounts, although i'm sure it is indeed possible. Here's a brief rundown on how cpop works from a tech at VO:

Cpanel has its own passwd and shadow files for each user located inside of a directory named etc , and then it adds a folder inside of the mail directory of each user for each pop acct setup as well as an inbox file for the mail, no redirecting file thou like sendmail uses to tell it which user to goto

Maybe that can help a bit for an idea of what you may need to move.

I was more curious of how to automate the signup process through a webpage without admin access to cpanel. however finding out how to import/export an accounts email configuration could come in handy.

Yes,

The process of importing/exporting email settings could become more than handy especially when you are moving a large number of accounts from one dedicated server to that of another provider... :)

Since many of the email accounts comply with protocols
such as POP3, there could be some way out eve if platforms are different.

If this feature is provided, it can also make things easier
for service providers. Just advertise as to how easy it will be to migrate to their accounts. ;)

Cheers

may i know the url of neomail .. i tried neomail.com/net/org but its not related to email :(

anyone tried aero mail and kmmail before? go to the url above from my first post and have a look at the demo, it looks really impressive indeed ... tell me what you think ok? :)

fruitsalad - i might be wrong, but i thought text files use less resources than mysql database and thus will run faster ... please correct me if i am wrong. if mysql work faster and uses less resources, it would be great, as i have more options to choose for. :)

by the way, do you guys know whether the webmail will enable me to use email for all my websites(different domain)?

you are correct to a certain degree. From what i've read, flat file is faster under lighter load and mysql is faster when there is heavy load. I guess your want for flat file is justified, as these webmail scripts werent really intended to be like hotmail in terms of size.

here's a quote from the neomail page:
Q. What kind of system requirements does NeoMail have?
A. This largely depends on what you want to do with it. NeoMail was designed without a database back-end. This typically makes for more speedy performance under smaller loads, but higher system demands once the load increases, causing such a solution to fall behind its database-driven counterparts in high-load situations. However, given a reasonable server-class machine to run on, with plenty of RAM and a properly configured NeoMail/MTA combination to limit mail spools and folders to a reasonable size, NeoMail scales surprisingly well. I get feedback from plenty of users that have NeoMail installed on systems with thousands of users. There's no way in the world all those people could access it at once, but then again, I never said you could run Hotmail-sized installations with this thing. :) Give it a try and let me know how it performs on your setup. The only way to get concrete answers for questions like this is plenty of experimentation.

thanks guys for all the suggestions and comments ...

i have heard lot of good stuff about squirrelmail from the forum and others, but too bad i don't think my raq3 server comes with imap. thus, i think the best choice now is popper mail. it has lots of features and the outlook alike layout looks great :) ... did anyone use popper mail before? good/bad?

i personally know the guy who built aero mail and i have used it for about 6 months. it is by far the best 'light weight' web based email (written in PHP with not sql) in existance. --> as per your requirements.

here is the url for the info:

http://freshmeat.net/projects/aeromail/

mark has about ~300,000 + people using his webmail client and he is always adding new features etc... as per user requests. this product is even distributed with various boxed sets of linux.

it is completely free and while i may be biased since mark is one on my best friends, i can sware by his coding skill and product functionality.

you will be more then happy with this set up!! i guarantee it !!

in short: IT KICKS MAJOR A** :D

thanks nate for your reply. actually i was using aero mail last year when i was in my university ... my university uses aero mail as their webmail (really surprise when i saw aero mail :))
and yup its really simple, user-friendly and load very fast. but does the lastest version comes with address book and other features?

moreover, what server are you using? is raq3 server comes with IMAP? or how to check whether IMAP is installed on my server or not?
