Looking into upgrading my paypal account so I can take credit card details over the telephone.

Has anyone done this before? Is it any good?

Can you set-up multiple accounts that can take payments?

It's a nice bonus feature, which we were thinking of as well, the only concern is down to how many staff you have. If it's just you alone, then there's no issue, however if you have a few staff, then you do have to be careful about your security processes.

In a number of call centres i've visited in my career, they take steps such as making sure there are no pens and paper on the desks, so people cant copy the card numbers down and use them fraudulently. It's a higher level of trust involved, but like I say, if it's just you, it should be fine.

To be honest PayPal's Virtual Terminal looks great and simple; however, if you live within the United States I would honestly look into CDGCommerce, for a fee of $10.00/mo for Statement & Support you can seamlessly accept credit cards through WHMCS and also use their included Virtual Terminal at no additional charge.

My business and clients are going to be within the United Kingdom and so I dont think CDGCommerce would fit our needs.

If you know of any other virtual terminal that is cheaper and works just as well as paypal then please let me know :)

I quickly looked over this site. Maybe it has the features you need?

The biggest issue you may face with the PayPal virtual terminal is the higher risk of fraud and chargebacks. PayPal is well aware of the potential abuse and monitor it accordingly. To prevent against this, make sure you always have a tracking number for everything you sell, use a cvv, and if possible have some type of contract in place where the customer agrees to that purchase.

The other solution would be to find a more merchant friendly processor.

A friend has that and it's pretty handy, since on a laptop you can go on the road and accept payments at hotspots. It's U.S. only and you can't have more than one business listed as the identifier. Some banks will let you set up to 3 "sub accounts" for doing it, but it would take that and something like PC-Charge software (which supports Internet now) or a gateway virtual terminal.

What products are you selling, how are you shipping. PP had terms and conditions.

I also need a virtual terminal to process credit card payments over the phone. We are an airport transfer business and need to take credit cards. Our average amount will be around 300 to 500 Euros. We are a French company and French registered with French company account.

I eventually decided that Paypal was in fact not the best option for me.

I went with Barclays ePDQ. That includes the merchant account setup and £10 per month flat rate.

With a 3% charge on all transactions.

Looked at paypal and just too expensive. I have asked for quote from worldpay/RBS as I used to use them just for normal credit card payments online and they were always fairly good. 3% on transactions is ok and £10 per month not too bad.

The real bargain is the merchant account. They dont charge you to set that up - From what I remember RBS wanted around £100 to setup the merchant account.

Barclays provides you with everything you need to get the ball rolling.

I have used Virtual Terminal but too expensive. If in the U.S.,try Square with your iphone. Fees are much less than Paypal. You can either key in the numbers on your iphone or ipad or swipe a card through the small white square dongle. Works also with Droid phones. And Square transfers money into your bank account the next day.

Thanks. Not in the USA. Mainly UK customers, but we are in France.
Paypal maybe cheaper as no contract and could just do for the 5 months we need for over ski season and then stop till the next year.......on other hand could pay £10 a month somewhere and get for whole year.
