View Full Version : Looking to drop $500-$1000 on a good hosting name

Tried thinking of a good name but nothing is available. So I'm looking to just buy one. Is there a place that lists hosting names for sale?

I'm guessing you're talking about domain names and not IP (intellectual property)? Have you looked at sedo.com, sitepoint etc?

whats wrong with HostNexus as in your sig?

Surley $500-$1000 could be spent on a new server? or a couple of good nights out??

NexDog

Nothing wrong with HostNexus and I would never rebrand that. I'm thinking of getting into the unlimited game which is why I need a different company.

I looked at sedo and the prices for domains with "host" in the are simple ridiculous.

Godaddy also has a domain shop type thing.

Also check out NamePros.com forum, super good place to get a deal on a domain name.

If you like a domain, contact the domain owner and make an offer. I've bought some domains through the years that way, including this one.

Same $1,000 and think of a name. I would much prefer a few nights or a new server then spend it on a domain name. Even if I REALLLLY wanted it .. like a few company names I'm severely jealous of :P

In my opinion it's a very important to choose a good name. If you need to spend money to do so then go for it. A server can be bought at any time but changing your name is not so easy.

Jack

I agree. A good name is marketing itself and easy to remember.

All the best.

Save the money mate. Sometimes, you just gotta think "harder" and be more creative. Once you find a great name, you'll be happy you saved the money :D

1k on a domain? How rich are you?

Be creative, what's your favorite food/place/game/thing? Name it after that. It'll come to you eventually.

$1K is not a lot for a good domain.. I won't discuss what we've both spent, and sold domains for throughout the years but it was a lot more than that. There is a lot of value in some domains and that's what it is all about at the end of the day.

Obviously, for the domain dedicatedserver.com or hosting.com, I would pay a lot more than 1k.

But it looks like the OP has just run out of ideas, not worth fishing out 1k, when you could be creative/original, and only have to spend $10.

I don't know if this would work but have you ever thought of making a contest to see who can come up with the best hosting name for you and maybe offer the winner a year of free hosting or something of the like.

Just spend a week on thinking of the right and ideal name for your domain name.)
It's better than pay 1k.)))

A week of my time is worth a lot more than 1k. ;)

Thanks for all the replis. Received many PMs which I appreciate. If anyone has a nice domain please feel free to PM me. Doesn't have to have hosting or host in in.

A good domain is the first step towards Good Branding & Marketing. If you calculate the amount of Money & Time you are going to spend marketing it, the cost of getting a premium domain is nothing.

Also don't forget. Time is Money.

Careful about posting your thoughts on new business names and domain names on a public forum, someone might try and be sneaky and snipe them from you (unless you already registered them :P )

Somewhat close to hostopia.com, which is a host that's been in the business for some time now.

LUL that's what I was about to say. Someone could just register is for $10, and then sell it to the OP for $500-$1000

Hell, I would if I got the chance! Quick easy money.

Correct. I knew it reminded me of another host.

How about Laurushost? Your name, Laurence originates from laurus in latin, and "laurels" is a word that originates from laurus too. :)

NexDog

There are many hosts that sound similar, do you think hostonia is too close to hostopia? Hostopia has Utopia connotations and Hostonia has more of a Nation connotation (Macedonia, Caledonia etc). I registered it just in case, anyhow.

Dan, don't really want a host based on my name or initials. :)

Jamson

Hostonia doesn't seem close to Hostopia - but that is just my personal opinion. :)

I think it's memorable and catchy. It doesn't come across as too personal, which for your target market, works well.

A few weeks a go, I was also working days and days trying to come up with a .com domain that clearly convinced me according to my strategy.
I think I came up with several hundreds of interesting available domains, but just like 5% of them were clearly interesting.
The variants to considere were duplicated because I was ofcourse going to use a logo, and some aparentely uninteresting names suggested great ideas for a logo, which would in turn complete the impression that one wants to leave in the audience.

I was also on a dilemma because I had already a localmarket and the new domain would be more for nation and international wide.
I opted to go with one already registered, so I sign up for a bidding, I was willing to pay 1k or even 1.5k.
The day and time for the bidding arrived and I forgot it, it ended on like 200usd.. ha ha.. oh man.

Yes, time is money, and didn't want to spend more looking for an available good one.

I feel ya. I thought of a great name but the .com was registered and they wanted 2k for it. However the .net was expired and going into auction. I also forgot about the end date and got oubid. I think the winner picked up for less than $100. It was NitroHost.net.

I still like 'HappilyHosted.net', but maybe I am a little biased ;)

Sometimes people purchase domains because of the age. It's pretty hard starting up a business with a name you registered today :). Anyway, if your interested in starting a VPS host I can offer VzVPS in .Com, .Net, and .Org in a bundle. It's aged about a year and a few months.

Lol domain names are a lot like real estates on the web. It' appreciates and sometimes depreciates. If I knew I'd pick up a few hosting domain names when .co came out lol

I'm not quite sure I agree with that statement. RE is not priced by a "brand", or "name" behind it. Maybe a few times in history (such as Donald Trump for example) have demanded premium prices for their name tied to that RE, but most cases it is not relevant.

A domain name however is driven many times internationally, and the value of a particular name and the branding it can help suggest is rather important. Once a company establishes that brand it doesn't depreciate unless the company depreciates as a whole or a failed business plan that does not adapt to the change of the markets. Sure there are exceptions to this rule, but speaking generally it does not work this way.
