Either authorize.net or 1shoppingcart (they require you have a merchant account already) are good choices. They have recurring billing and a lot of options or online purchase. Authorize is simpler and less expensive, 1shoppingcart has tons of features like tracking and email lists for customers.

Paypal: most widely used and trusted payment gateways in the worldwide.
2CO : Better and safer to used. Nice alternative to paypal.
Moneybooker : good system with merchant protection.
Google Checkout : Good payment gateways integrated with google adwords.

My top would be Paypal and GoogleCheckout.

I think it largely depends on who you are targetting to but these 2 are known throughout the world by everyone. People trust the brands.

The best payment option is credit card, with PayPal being a close second. Here in Canada, we have direct banking transfers (INTERAC) which is a good choice (but offers no real buyer protections).

PayPal has to be the top payment option followed by Credit Card (Visa, MasterCard, AMEX, Discover). No one has requested anything else since you can do so much with those two options.

We've used PayPal and 2Checkout and both are fine. Haven't really touched on anything else.

Odd Fact

Paypal is probably the easiest.
Authorize will require a merchant account. Depending on the quantity and amount of transactions 2Checkout may be better.

Even with Paypal the customer can pay with credit card without being registered in paypal.

One of the only things I don't like about 2checkout is not being able to get paid by paypal. They do have a payoneer option too which is a plus. I hate the wait times that 2checkout has for getting paid as well.

Every company should offer Credit Card processing that is separate from Paypal. PayPal should also be offered since it is the most popular and trusted.

First, by way of transparency, let me say that I work for Shift4 Corporation- a major player in the payment processing industry. I don't want this to come off as a sales pitch and I won't even include a link to our site, but I do think this thread has left out a key point:

Some of the solutions mentioned previously in this post are great for small operations, selling a few items here and there from a home-based organization. However, when the orders start piling up or (heaven-forbid) there is a problem, the limitations of those solutions become remarkably clear. Business Pundit has a great post on the subject at businesspundit.com/to-paypal-or-not-to-paypal/ (Sorry my account is too new to let me link that, you'll have to cut and paste).

As Pundit's site put it, when high-transaction volume becomes an issue for your company, sometimes a more robust solution can actually be cheaper than PayPal; not to mention the fact that most come with 24/7 support and at least limited (or in our case almost complete) customization.

Find the solution that works best for you and your customers… and if that happens to be Shift4 Corporation, well – that’s fine by me.

For me, I think PayPal, MoneyBookers and Credit Card would be the top 3 payment methods since they are acceptable on almost all countries on the world.

These are just my opinions but these are my top 5 I'd choose but I keep feeling I forgot 2 more:
Paypal(Very widely and commonly used and sort of mandatory for online commerce stores and more)
Credit Card(Definitely a Must unless you run that with paypal)
Debit Cards(Saw a question today on yahoo Answers regarding host that accept debit card so there must be a need)
MoneyBookers(Another fairly popular and established online payment system)
AlertPay(Used quite often as well)
