:) Grrr, it's back now. Couldn't reach it for about 10 minutes. I ran three traces (from here and in the US) and all went belly up.

I'll get back in my box now. :)

Someone must have tripped over the "big plugin" ;). Considering Google has it's own datacenter(s) I'm actually a little surprised it even went down for a short time. Nothings perfect :).

actually I've had Google being 'unreachable' a few times in the past couple of months. Probably not down, but something in their local area seems to go on the fritz occasionally.

Doesn't google have 3 datacenters? Or atleast 3 big rooms in some datacenters?

They have thousands of servers in multiple locations. There were some threads about this a while ago.

Those servers, also, are of three types: webservers, index servers, and document servers. When you do a search at Google, you're served that "google" page by a webserver at one of seven datacenters worldwide (at least; again, they're growing continually). The query is answered on an index server, which draws the actual cached pages from the document servers. Anyway, as far as how many datacenters, it's likely that at least some of those index and doc servers are at still different locations from the seven sets of webservers.
