View Full Version : FDCServers - read

I've been reading this board for some time now, and seen comments related to fdcservers and read problems that they've had, and that people have had with them. Last week, me and a associate decided decided to take a stab with getting a box with them. We aren't a webhosting company (well sorta not) and we aren't putting any of the clients on the box, so thats why we went with them (from what i've read everyone had said, don't go with fdcservers unless it's for personal use). We got a Athlon Xp 2000, 512mb, 120gig hd, for $99/month and a $139.00 setup fee.

We ordered it one afternoon, and they had it up and running within 48 hours (wasn't quite as fast as we would have liked, but it wasn't a big deal either). After we got it, we were upgrading, and installing software. We first ran into problems downloading stuff from our webservers at uunet, and rackshack. We were only getting around 16kb/s (downstream). Then we did a little more looking around, and seen that it was capped at 10mbit. So my associate e-mailed them and said that we were having this problem, and whatnot and they had fixed it.

So the fastest speed we've gotten when downloading stuff for the server was around 3,000kb/s and today I tried doing a little stress test on it, and it hit 2,100kb/s which I thought was good.

So here I am now, writing this e-mail and sharing a good experience with FDCServers. I know I was really really hesitant in ordering the server from seeing all the problems other people were having. Now i've only had the server for a week now, and it was sorta rought in the begining, but now it's going good, and they seem like good and honest people.

(and if anyone was wondering what we used the server for, it's for file mirroring)

Thanks

I'm glad to hear FDC is improving.

I know you haven't had your server for very long but during the past week in which you've had your server, how has the uptime been?

staggs: download bw is usually unused. They are on a pretty good line provider afterall. If you can hit those speeds on uploads, then that's another thing altogether. I think you can, but probably not consistently. I may be wrong. If you can post some experience on uploads, we will be glad to hear of your experience.

Thanks for the replies guys. JonL we haven't had any downtime so far, but I'm sure there will be, I can expect to have some downtime for the price/deal.

Silversurfer, We are usally doing around 300KB/s at all times, besides when I got a few people downloading from it at once, we hit 2,100KB/s. Thats the fastest I've seen it go, and it was doing that for around 5 min total then as people finished their downloads, it dropped of course.

That sounds cool.

Glad to hear they fixed the speed issues in you case. When I had a server with them months and months ago, I also had similar speed issues, but after them trying to fix it for 3 months running, I gave up. I certainly hope they improve for their client's sakes.

I work with FDC (as you know) and there ARE improvements all the time.

How long did it take for them to answer your support email?

I think Nocsol can go in and knock on their doors... so he probably need no support emails...

I was asking staggs :)

Maybe they had so many cancellations that the speed factor isn't an issue any more :D j/k I couldn't resist. ;)

JonL,

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you guys, but I've been slammed with work, and didn't really have time to check back in. But it took around 4 - 6 hours I believe.

I really wouldn't want to push more then 10mbit upload from this server (at all times, i'd kinda feel guilty, and order another server, or double up on my payment to them)
