Hello all,

Please forgive me if this was dealt with elsewhere... my searches came up empty.

I have used shared hosting only so far and am a little confused as how cloud will differ. With cloud hosting, my understanding is that the server would be totally managed by me.

Would I have to install everything myself via the command line? Apache, MySQL, PHP, Ruby, etc?

Any good tutorials or articles out there on this issue?

Thank you!!!

Hey, Welcome to the Forum Its a great community for all kinds of people, Nice to have a guy like you here :).

Do you know what cloud hosting is? If not let me explain a little about it the way I would, basically its a cloud of computers lets say for example just for now we use, 3 computers now these 3 computers are all around my house or where ever they are and all three of them share the Disk Space and bandwidth and RAM, Everything is put to gather on all these three computers, You have much more that what you have, Its like having 3 servers runing your web site, in case one falls down another one would be up to save your site, Well I think soo..

About you having to manage the cloud, yes if you sign up for a plan or package should we say and the provider dosn't manage it then you'll need to keep it updated and all so you'll basically need to install everything by command.

Thanks, that helps.

So, let me see if I am understanding things: When you sign up for a "Cloud Hosting" account, you basically get an empty install of Linux (or whatever). Then, via SSH, you would run commands on the "Cloud Server" to install any desired software, such as Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc.

Is that correct?
Are common things, like Apache or MySQL, ever installed automatically?

Thanks again!

I may be wrong, but it sounds like you may be confusing Cloud Hosting with a dedicated server or VPS.

I'd say that depends, however if you are on a linux distro like centos it's pretty easy.

They can be. It depends on the service. Each provider can truly package and sell whatever services they like. Many will offer "prepackaged" solutions, and Cloud itself can be done in many types of methods. VPS, Virtual Dedicated Servers, Cloud Instance's and utility computing (the oldest and most common), Shared Web Hosting, etc. Nowadays Cloud Hosting is pretty much limitless.

You will find the maximum number of providers selling VPS in the name of Cloud servers and a few of them also provide control panels like Plesk, cPanel, etc. This should make life easier.
