I'm on a fastserver box running Web Host Manager and CPanel, and apparently one of my FTP passwords has been corrupted or surreptitiously changed.... and I can't figure out for the life of me how to change the password so that I can log in to FTP.
It's the 'main' FTP account that WHM creates when you add the new domain name. I've tried changing the password of the account in WHM, but that doesn't do the trick.

run /scripts/ftpupdate in a root shell to see if that resolves the issue.

That's the same as "Synchronize FTP Passwords" in WHM right? Done that... no fix

That feature within WHM should do the same thing. A couple other things you may want to try:
1. Rather than use the domain name try the accounts IP.
2. Try manually setting the password on the account using the passwd command within a root shell.
3. If you are using PureFTP or recently switched, make sure your username includes your domain name. i.e. user@domain.com
4. If all else fails, try restarting ftp.

This sucks... I've done all of that. (Still on ProFTPd)

Okay this is getting weird...
I just created (in Cpanel) a new ftp account, username: new.
Well, it works, but doesn't show up in Cpanel... like it doesn't exist. So I can't delete, change pw, etc.

You know, you do pay for support from your dedicated server provider. Why don't you email then with a brief description of your problem as well as your servers login details so they can take a look for you.

Evidently I don't :( They wanted $50 / hour to look at it.
I opened proftpd.conf and removed a Timeoutidle comment in there, and restarted proftpd and it works now. I have no idea what the problem was, as it worked this morning and then suddenly stopped working.
I appreciate your help, it's working now (god knows why)

FTPHostName: YourMainServerIP
user: YourThinkItIsError
pw: NewestPassword
