I resell space on my dedicated server which is a P3 866 with 256MB ram (planning on upping to 512MB soon)
My question is, a client would like to setup some mailing solution, but does not like the ads that go along with services such as bigmailbox etc.
So they asked if we would be able to provide them with 1000 Pops. Can my server handle this? At the moment there is only 10 small-medium size sites on the server with much of the resources going to waste.
Any feedback will be much appreciated.

What is the mail system? I know qmail with vpopmail can do it very easily, I am sure yours can as well. Our mail server has I believe over 6000 pop accounts on it and 30,000 aliases.

Create a mail account and look in the /etc/passwd file for it.

the passwd file only contains entries for each domains virtual account on there.
ie. not for each pop mail account created.

Then you might have a chance, of getting away with it, because once the password file gets over 2000 to 3000 entries it really really really slow to do things regarding passwords, adding users and deleting users.
Are you using a control panel.

thanks for your assistance jayglate :)
yep
I have whm/cpanel
another issue i thought of is also that how would people create their accounts.
As is, the admin of that account will have to go to cpanel and add each account manually.
Im sure there is a way through the use of cgi to automate signups and forgotten password fuctions.
what are my options?

cpanel.net
Cpanel might be able to handle it, but automated signup and stuff like that you are on your own, You might be able tof ind some help here on this board, make a new post about it.
