View Full Version : When do I need SSL
psmuk 06-07-2010, 11:28 AM Hi there
Looking at launching an ecommerce site, after looking at the options available to me, I am looking at using a Third Party Gateway for payment like paypal / ProTX. A few websites I see using this method have SSL certificates when the potential customer inputs there personal details, should I use SSL on the personal details page? or is this a waste of money? Would this not be part of Data Protection?
Hope someone can help/answer this question which, no doubt to some of the guru's on here will be easily answered.
I would suggest the usage of a SSL certificate on any pages that involve the input of personal data. Plus, having an SSL certificate builds a trust factor towards your customers. I do think the benefits of a SSL certificate will justify the cost of purchasing one.

nick771 06-07-2010, 01:46 PM It does help people feel more assured when entering form information. The other side of the coin is being able to send and receive emails from your server securely. Programs like Eudora and Outlook can be set to do this, so when a user is sending info stored on your mail server it's safe, but also when you're downloading it (when checking email). Just make sure it's a part of your hosting package, it can be very tricky to install a certificate with some of them.
allin1 06-07-2010, 02:41 PM Everywhere, where personal Data is used you should add SSL Certificate.

Yes, you should use SSL certificate.
Also you can add special image on the first page of your site, that will show to your customers that you use SSL for personal data protection.
madlymasterful2018 06-08-2010, 12:14 PM If you are considering that people should pay you online then you should purchase the SSL certificate as soon as you can.
arisythila 06-08-2010, 12:27 PM Anytime you accept credits cards, or personal information you should do it securely. Think of a SSL as a cheap insurance policy.
psmuk 06-08-2010, 04:13 PM So from the replies I have had, I need an SSL even if I use Paypal etc, just for the personal details???
Sorry for my ignorance, but if this is the case how come so many people dont use these for the customers personal details?
thanks

Yep you should have it when you're taking personal information of customers. Not only will it make your customers seem much more confident when they see the bright lock in the corner of their screen but it's also good practice to take care of your customer's information as much as possible
Respite 06-08-2010, 10:58 PM Think about investing in a SSL certificate also, TrueBusiness ID etc these increase customer confidence...
Also on that note try your hardest to organize Credit card processing that works on your front-end. when customers get redirected to third party sites you scare them off not all but some.
Vasily Grodnenko 06-09-2010, 10:25 AM When you have any payments online - you have to use SSL Certificate in order to feel safe that the process of transferring money via the net will be secure...
geemoney 06-10-2010, 03:44 PM Paypal guest checkout. Simple and easy for the consumer.
DaKine 06-12-2010, 12:05 AM When you use a processor like PayPal you do not need an SSL Certificate as your customers are directed to the PayPal payment webpage to input their info. This page is secured by PayPal's own SSL certificate.
imago-allan 06-12-2010, 01:20 AM I agree. If you are using Paypal you DON'T need an SSL. Data are gathered by Paypal on their own secured server. You can see these pieces of information once it is emailed to you by Paypal (receipt) or you can also view them in Paypal's control panel.

When using PayPal as payment processor you are able to display your logo at the payment page hosted by PayPal. But to display this – without your customers getting any warnings – requires that you host your logo at a site using SSL with a valid SSL certificate
D_Dude 06-12-2010, 06:35 AM But presumably you'll be taking personal details on your site aswell which you will need a SSL for..
3picFail 06-12-2010, 11:39 AM You will need an SSL certificate if for example you have users sign up on your website before being transferred to paypal's site, or if users sign in on your site.

Most of your Gateways provide for a SSL between your web site and the payment processor. Depending on where you are obtaining your MID, they may offer a Secure Gateway as part of their processing platform.

If you set your website to do this then you are correct. For instance, you may be using WHMCS or ClientExec. Then you would want to use an SSL.
But in some cases your customer will enter their info at PayPal's site and you will be informed of their info from PayPal. For instance, if you use PayPal subscriptions your customer is directed to them immediately.
AirJordansHead 06-14-2010, 11:51 AM In my own experiences, using SSL in guarding sensitive privacy information when customers registering, logging and checking out on your e-commerce sites would be necessary.
Have a nice day,
shift4sms 06-14-2010, 12:31 PM One or two posters in this thread mentioned that if you use Paypal, you don't need SSL. I would argue against this as you already have one credibility strike against you in using Paypal only. If you ask for any personal information on your site and you are not using SSL, strike two. Me, I usually walk away after the first strike so the third strike is moot.
