View Full Version : Weinbar Performance
XTStrike 04-23-2001, 06:10 AM I have heared many good words about Weinbar, and am now seriously thinking about getting a server with them before the end of this week.
Does anybody have any logs or servers with Weinbar so i can see their proven track record?
The availability, connection speed, etc...
I have fallen into the ***** and CobaltRacks traps already and i really wouldnt like to fall into yet another, as it is now getting expensive.
Any comments (even from Weinbar) would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
XTStrike 04-23-2001, 08:43 AM ok, im am no longer "seriously thinking", i am "definitely" getting a server tomorrow or wednesday, i have a burning credit card here and its just waiting to buy a dedicated server.
I just need to know a little info on Weinbar first
XTStrike 04-23-2001, 10:31 AM come on people im really desperate for some opinions on this one, im not signing up with Weinbar until i get a few people to tell me how good/bad it is !!, lol
allending 04-23-2001, 10:34 AM I dont have a dedicated account, but their shared hosting that i am on is great. The tech support is often on icq, the ticket system works great, the speed is very very fast. :cool:
XTStrike 04-23-2001, 11:26 AM great another positive comment, im really starting to like Weinbar, any other additions? id like as much background knowledge as possible on Weinbar.
Kaith Sutai-Rustaz 04-23-2001, 11:27 AM Do a search on them. They've been discussed here a few times before, favorably I might add.
I just signed up an account with them to give em a test run, and we are leaning towards either leasing or co-loing a server with them soon.
XTStrike 04-23-2001, 11:30 AM yeah, ive noticed the "stunning" reviews of Weinbar, it really for upto date knowledge, as you may know ISP's can go rapidly downhill if they dont keep up their technology.
Thanx for your responses thus far :-)
XTStrike 04-23-2001, 11:57 AM hey, ive seen the UUNet FTP test is a great way of testing your connectivity speed.
Has the test been tried and posed for weinbar?, i havent noticed one, if you have a server there i would be grateful, i think its ftp.uu.net and its the 8.5 MB file, i think the average download speed is about 8 seconds? with slower speeds for bad providers like *****
dektong 04-23-2001, 12:04 PM I have posted the updated (download) test speed for weinbar here:
http://webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=7681&perpage=20&pagenumber=3
At one point, I was able to burst to 2200KB/s. Typical burstable value was about 10Mbps.
If you need to see the latency time of one of my server at weinbar, just email me...
cheers,
:beer:
c0bra 04-23-2001, 12:49 PM The only thing that disturbed me slightly about Weinbar dedicated servers was the following statement on their website:
"Bandwidth is measured on the average amount transferred."
What does this mean exactly? If you're pre-ordering blocks of bandwidth as is needed how can you determine the amount required if you're being billed on the "average amount transferred".
Anyone care to explain this to me. :bawling:
Thanks!
Let me explain!
First, it should read "Transfer is measure on avereage amount" instead of bandwidth.
We charge you per GB transferred. Instead of charging you by the 95th percentile (as we are billed from our provider), we average out your use per month and calculate your total GB transfer. This is what you are billed on. If you have 50GB of transfer, yet you average 60GB, we charge you for 10GB overage.
Hope that clarifies things a bit.
XTStrike 04-23-2001, 01:52 PM I am seeing some nice fast responses from Weinbar, im going to sign up tomorrow.
Mr Weinstein you sell your business well if only all server hosts were as dedicated as yourself :D , now if only I could chat to you via ICQ I could check out your current specials and sign up with you!
my ICQ is 266587
Alan - Vox 04-23-2001, 01:57 PM Although im not a customer of weinbar i will be sure soon, i have had people test their speed from various places in the world and weinbar beat the other companies in most places.
Kaith Sutai-Rustaz 04-23-2001, 02:38 PM Well, I did some checks using qwkmon.com's site checker.
checked vers. a site I have at a VDI host, the Weinbar site was -very- consistantly in the 150ms area, whereas the VDI based site was very consistantly in the 350ms area. Ran tests 10 times each, alternating em.
also, server has been up a while:
bash$ uptime
11:33am up 37 days, 14:15, 6 users, load average: 0.57, 0.35, 0.32
I'll have more info in a few days when dns fully propigates.
so far, so good. :)
XTStrike 04-23-2001, 02:49 PM thanx for the monitoring, i have a feeling Weinbar will be good.
Although i always like to dig up as much dirt as possible about anybody i go with after 2 previous bad experiences.

you might want to share where did you had your last 2 bad experiences ?? ... :confused:
Matrix 04-23-2001, 03:36 PM xstrike,
I've been with them a little over a month and everything has been really smooth. I don't think you will be disappointed in them.
XTStrike 04-23-2001, 04:15 PM my previous bad experiences were with :
www.*****.com
aka: www.badwebhost.com
and
www.cobaltrack.com
aka: www.cobaltracksucks.com
c0bra 04-23-2001, 04:22 PM Thanks Michael. I think you pretty much answered my question on your bandwidth policy. :) However the usual terms and conditions, acceptable use policy, and no anti-spam documents.... they dont seem to be available on your site?
Usually the first documents I read in full are these when I consider doing business with a company.
Hopefully my eyes are playing tricks on me.

ouch....... :( no comment... :(
XTStrike 04-23-2001, 04:34 PM yeah, ok enough insulting me, i chose some bad hosts in the past, Weinbar looks like a great choice, i havent heared a single bad comment yet!
I didnt find the "sucks" range of sites until after I signed up with the previous hosts!, lol
c0bra 04-23-2001, 04:40 PM Yeah but have you seen their AUP + terms and conditions yet?
Oh btw, which side of Liverpool you from? The red or the blue? :D
XTStrike 04-23-2001, 04:45 PM c0bra
its a definite RED :-)
~~~~~~~~~~~~
yeah, ill quiz them about the AUP etc... i dont know if they have one, maybe they simply work on a "warning" notice, or common sense policy?
id prefer a common sense policy as most professionals know what is right without being given a bulleted list of do and dont !
I mean any idiot knows you dont packet from a box of ping -f etc... or you get booted! you dont have to be told in an AUP.
Your thoughts? - and maybe WeinBar's thoughts ?
Sorry about the AUP. The link is www.weinbar.com/restrictions.html
c0bra 04-23-2001, 05:40 PM Ahhhhh so there they are. Well we're at it, you should clear something up. Do these content restrictions for example apply to both shared solutions and dedicated server customers? No Adult content etc.
A lot of people were asking the same when we went with tera-byte when they had tough restrictions on such things as content. But they said those portions of the AUP only applied to shared customers.
Good to know. I'm a big fan of Liverpool, three cup finals this year what a season. Hopefully we'll secure that all important place in the champions league as well. We'll show fergie how European football is done next season! :P
Well now I've had a chance to peruse their AUP it does seem a tad excessive. But I'll await to see if all portions apply to dedicated customers or just their shared hosting clients. The conditions are probably a bit too restrictive for us but others will no doubt say they're upfront and fair.
(SH)Saeed 04-23-2001, 06:08 PM I signed up for Weinbar's WHT special about 30mins ago (waiting for my account activation).. I will keep you posted.
I was reading their AUP and found this:
We reserve the right to charge additional fees for extremely high bandwidth sites (over 6 GB of transfer per month). This only includes .1% of our currently hosted web sites. We will give 10 days notice to resolve high bandwidth issues. We will not host web sites which contain adult material.
It turned out to be an old AUP and they need to change that. So no sweat :)
Hi... regarding the adult restrictions for dedicated servers....
There is none. You are free to host whatever you like on the dedicated servers as it is your box. There are 2 requirements.
1. It needs to be legal
2. No SPAM
Other than that, you are free to do with as you please.
The AUP is still from our Alabanza servers and thus is for primarily the shared servers. The transfer portion needs to be changed (thank you Zolbian for bringing that to our attention) because as you may or may not know, Alabanza is pretty stingy with their transfer allowances. The servers here are in our Phoenix NOC so those restrictions go out the window.
XTStrike 04-23-2001, 06:52 PM well, regardless, i was sold a long time ago, ive talked to the man himself a moment ago, i cant help but tell you all how good the service seems, and i havent even finished joining yet!
1st Class Support Cia Chat/ICQ/Phone
All Questions Answered Promptly
A quick 30 minute "trial" account, for which i got 800 KB/s while i was testing it
Im so confident, ive even started the transfer of my domains name servers before the server is setup, so they are ready in time.
:) :D ;) :stickout :cool:
(SH)Saeed 04-23-2001, 07:13 PM Hehehe :D
I just got my account set up (about 30mins after I signed up). I transfered a test site to test the speed and I sent the URL to a few in Europe as well as in USA. They all said it was very good speed.
So far: :agree: :agree:
XTStrike 04-24-2001, 03:23 AM May i ask what the URL is?, id like to test the speed myself from a T3 on my end :-)
I can imagine the fast setup response, he responded to my mails fairly promptly :) , what time was it when it was setup?, was it out of normal working hours?
(SH)Saeed 04-24-2001, 05:25 AM I haven't moved my domain to the account yet, but the url is: http://216.139.227.76/ (The main page is about 150KB with all the pictures etc.)
There has been one problem though, they don't seem to have Perl DBI module installed. Since my site is coded in Perl/CGI and using MySQL database, a lot of the site are not functional (can't connect to MySQL). I have emailed their Help Desk with this problem and waiting for a fix. Will let you know how it goes.
Before I end this message, I just have to say that THEIR SPEED IS AMAZING!!, I get atleast 5 times the speed I get on my RaQ3, kinda makes it feel like the server is in Sweden, hehe :D
(SH)Saeed 04-24-2001, 05:28 AM This is my 200th post! :D :D :D
(sorry, had to do it, hehe)
XTStrike 04-24-2001, 06:03 AM zolbian,
you are right, the speed is amazing, its instant access.
Ive just signed up for a dedicated server with them, ill keep you all updated on the performance.
Signup is easy, although, they could go some way to stop the form from blanking when you submit incorrect information.
I am in the UK and put the standard +44 in front of the number, it didnt accept it and when taken back to correct it i found that the signup page was blanked, maybe something they should look into!
The clock has started, I submitted the information and credit card number at:
11:00am UK (GMT)
XTStrike 04-24-2001, 06:04 AM also a "confirmation" would be good too, as i submitted the form with the option for "VISA" and it should have been "MASTERCARD" oops. :blush:
Ive emailed Weinbar of the correction :rolleyes:
(SH)Saeed 04-24-2001, 07:35 AM Anyone else having problems connecting to weinbar.com? I noticed them being down at 1:15pm GMT+1 (4:15am PST)
dektong 04-24-2001, 09:06 AM 9:03 am EST (6:03 am PST) ... they still seem down! My serer is monitored via qwkmon.com and now my uptime is only 98.98% (used to be 100%). Hence, the down time is about several hours already. Hope this will be resolved asap.
cheers,
:beer:
Hi everyone:
There was a router problem and it has been taken care of. As soon as I have more information on what the problem was, I will post it.
oiii dektong.. how ya' doing ? :D
i can't reach my server too......
yeahhhhh.. hopefully the issue resolved asap :cool:
dektong 04-24-2001, 09:53 AM atiep, my server is up now... So at least 2-3 hours down :(
cheers,
:beer:
(SH)Saeed 04-24-2001, 09:54 AM atiep, the issue is solved, they are back up and running at good speed.
One little thing though, it's been about 7hs since I emailed the Help Desk and still no answer and no DBI module :(
I checked the server and there were about 80 sites, is it just me wanting the DBI module?! I thought that was a pretty common thing.
:cool: dektong, my server is now aliveeeeeee and kickingg :D .... yes the downtime is hurt... :bawling: especialy for people like me who sale' shared hosting... hopefully will not happen again.. or if it will happen' hopefully will happen' only for 5 minutes or less :stickout
zolbian:
i already receive reply from James (weinbar NOC) about the problem, yes .. the helpdesk kinda slow.. i had 2 open ticket as well with them since 2 weeks ago :D
but Mr. Michael already did reply but not thru heldesk (wonderdesk), try emailing / icq mr Michael :D
XTStrike 04-24-2001, 10:53 AM OK, ive calmed down now! :)
Its just i hear so much about Weinbar, about how great they are, then 1 hour after i hand over my credit card number it goes down for a few hours, I hope you can all understand how i felt.
Im now pleased once more with their responsiveness and await the Dedicated server I have ordered from them, after which I will be able to fully comment upon their service.
I am sure you are all more than happy with your service at Weinbar as you have probably had many months uninterrupted useage.
I think its a good idea that Michael posts on this board when there is a problem as there is always a place I will be able to come to check performance and get quick updates on any current issues affecting WeinBar.
Regards
Wayne
(SH)Saeed 04-24-2001, 11:35 AM I'm still waiting for someone at WineBar.com to tell me why the DBI module is not installed on the server! I have posted on this board, used their Help Desk and also left an ICQ message and still not one word from them about DBI (almost 9 hours now).
Very intressting..
I apologize for the 9 hours on the help desk, but we treat the emergency cases first (I am sure you understand) We are getting back to everyone with the explanation for the router problem and are working diligently to make sure this is completely solved. We will get to your request shortly.
Thank you for your patience.
(SH)Saeed 04-24-2001, 01:05 PM Yes, I understand. Just sharing my experience with others. I have to say (yes, again), the speed to your servers are amazingly fast. I have only seen one more host with this kind of preformance and that is FutureQuest.net (I've never experienced better support, the longest I had to wait was I think 15minutes).
Anywhoo, I got email back from James saying that the DBI works. I don't know, maybe I'm doing something wrong here? Here is the error message I get, maybe someone here knows.
install_driver(mysql) failed: Can't locate DBD/mysql.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/5.00503/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/5.00503 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.005/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.005 .) at (eval 1) line 3.
Perhaps the DBD::mysql perl module hasn't been fully installed,
or perhaps the capitalisation of 'mysql' isn't right.
Available drivers: ADO, ExampleP, Multiplex, Proxy.
PS. I have wrote the script myself and it IS currently working on my RaQ3. I just copied it and changed the database name, login and password.
