When viewing the attached page in IE6, the result should be a black gradient and white gradient across a test color pattern, with the left edge being black and white and the right being completely transparent. Instead the gradient goes from white/black to gray.

I made the images in Photoshop, is there some trick to this?

Um, a zip file? Why didn't you just attach the .png file?
Let me turn on my AV, Jammer, and TJkiller, and then get back to you on that. :D

It contains the HTML file as well as the two images (background and gradient strip).

LOL, Mozilla seems to work perfectly and IE6 doesn't, for once...

Not really a fix (i.e, a bug in IE, this is just a workaround, silly MS) but I'll try it :)
