I'm skewing my thread title a little but but does anyone know which Domain Registrar I am looking for. I came across their site ways back and they had a VERY WEB 2.0 feel to it...

Just was googleing it to find it again and I can't seem to find the registrar...

namecheap still seems to be not very active on their registrar memberships. Most of their domains would still be with eNOM.

Which is strange because it's been a couple years now since they said they would do new registrations under their own registrar..

Godaddy are quite a long way ahead of everyone else as far as numbers go. It's interesting to see long time registers like Register.com and Network solutions slowly going down as the general public become more aware that you can buy your names cheaper.

I would like to point out that many people appreciate Godaddy as their pricing is competitive (so to say cheap) and there are many domain name extensions offered by them.

So let's take a look at the so-called "top 10" registrars worldwide as reported by webhosting.info, in terms of market share (along with the total number of domain registered):

1. GO DADDY - 30.309% (34,156,244)

2. ENOM - 8.316% (9,371,337)

3. TUCOWS (Canada) - 6.703% (7,553,518)

4. NETWORK SOLUTIONS - 5.699% (6,422,763)

5. SCHLUND+PARTNER (Germany) - 4.324% (4,872,655)

6. MELBOURNE IT (Australia) - 3.925% (4,422,686)

7. WILD WEST DOMAINS - 2.866% (3,230,173)

8. MONIKER - 2.516% (2,834,826)

9. REGISTER.COM - 2.205% (2,484,299)

10. RESELLERCLUB.COM (India) - 2.201% (2,480,53)

Now, like it or not (I don't), GoDaddy (along with Wild West Domains) is CLEARLY leading with a HUGE margin.

Godaddy with a bit less than 40M of domais is the king of this business...

Just add up all the domain names xD
would be close to 70-80M :p

GoDaddy rules because they give out promos & offers every now & then ;)

Thanks for this useful post.

Godaddy is the top domain registrar having the good reputations and having majority of satisfied customers over the world.

I would definitely say Godaddy, I have used them for most of the domains that I have owned and they are great. I definitely think that have a great reputation and they satisfy customers.

I think we are on the best way to replace one monopolist (NetSol) with the next (GoDaddy) one. There are companies out there offering better prices and better support, yet GoDaddy understands to drive business by marketing. I peronally would regret it if the small registrars all went out of business.

So if you are in the stage of looking for a registrar, I wouldn't choose the biggest one, because that's not allways the best. ;-)

I think Godaddy is at the top because their pricing is competitive and promos.

Godaddy is very competitive in terms of price especially when you consider their discount coupons. As the statistics shows, this allows them to capture 30% of the market share.

What is puzzling is that Network Solutions still have a credible market share. Of the 10 registrars, Network Solutions is one of the most expensive at US$34.99 compared to Godaddy's US$10.69.

The question is therefore: why does Network Solutions have such a large share of loyal customers? A savings of US$20 per domain per year is not exactly peanuts (more if you use the Godaddy's discount coupons).

Does anyone know the answer?

$20 per name year ARE peanuts when it comes to businesses, esp. whem most of them have only a few domains at most.

Network Solutions have 6 million domains - logically not all are businesses. Other than $35 per domain being insignificant to some, is there any special quality they have that Godaddy doesn't?

I read that 50% of Fortune500 companies actually go to Mark Monitor. They did not publish their prices on their site.

Personally, if I am willing to spend $35 a domain, I would go to Fabulous or Moniker and take on their maximum security option with privacy thrown in and still have change to spare. At the least I know that my domain is extremely protected.

Though i must say, i can understand if businesses are not keen to go to Godaddy. Perhaps Network Solutions have far better support and service - intangibles which businesses and some individuals consider neccessary.

Out of curiosity, what does Moniker do and provide that makes them more secure in terms of having your domains with them?

Their domain maxlock (US$20 per domain per year) or portfolio maxlock (US$125 per portfolio per year). You use that if your domains are worth that extra protection. However it is a definite hassle to transfer them out (you can say that's the intention anyway).

Surprising how GoDaddy is leading by such a huge margin, I would think those super bowl ads are paying off :D Not to mention their 0.99 cent promotion for domains.

Yeah those $0.99 domains definitely help. I wonder if they ultimately making any money on most of those...
