Martie 04-23-2001, 01:02 AM Here is an interesting post on them at scriptkeeper. http://ubbforums.infopop.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=001437 SI-Chris 04-23-2001, 01:11 AM It looks like their a division of CoffeeCup Software. I think CoffeeCup Software makes some highly rated products; however, their big selling point is "unlimited" disk space and bandwidth, which--as has been discussed here a zillion times--is really a marketing trick and hence something to be avoided. As an example, in their faq it says you get unlimited bandwidth, disk space, and e-mail accounts; then at the bottom is: Note: All services are subject to physical and technical limitations of the host servers. Websites that exceed the reasonable capabilities of a shared server, or cause the performance of other websites on that server to be affected, will be contacted to discuss other hosting options like a dedicated server. Even more damning is their TOS: Unlimited is determined by a set of Internet averages. At Bluedomino, we divide available resources by the number of users on the system. At any time that you exceed our averages, you will be contacted to discuss moving your site to a dedicated server. What the heck does that mean? I think the "average" website is something like 5 megabytes, with 500 megabytes of data transfer a month. Of course, who knows what they consider "average." This vague verbage is a warning sign--if you're planning on having a resonably popular website, get a host who gives you exact numbers so you know where you stand and don't have to be worried about being booted because your website is successful. dengdeng 04-23-2001, 01:52 AM I do know that there isn't such things as "unlimited" in the world and with my current *****, they offer "unlimited" traffic but I know that it's limited at 25GB upon reading their terms and conditions.... so I'll actually like to know if there's any hosts (reliable) out there that can offer me at least 50GB transfer per month (I'm using less than this at the moment but I predict that it might just go way beyond that soon) so that I won't have to worry abt the extra bandwidth charge. Harddisk space is important for me as well...at least 2GB (cos my site is rich in media content. avg. file size at around 4MB) I know the above requirement will lead to a dedicated server...but I seriously cannot afford that...I was with simplenet before...and they're "unlimited" and never shuts me down before...but I moved to a Hong Kong server which is sponsered..and recently to ***** cos the Hong Kong server is shutted down. I'm running a celebrity site at http://fayenatics.org/ thanks for your your help so far...i'm still looking around...most of my revenue comes from valueclick banners which is really not a lot....at most USD30 per month...so I'm looking for a hosting package that is less than USD50 (paying in USD...*sigh* I'm in Singapore!) m6.net 04-23-2001, 02:26 AM dengdeng, You did one smart thing and that is coming to this board before signing in. I beleive in most of the case "unlimited" word is just a marketing trap. Therefore will advise you to read the terms and condition many times before you sign with any one claiming "unlimited" bandwidth or webspace. Or better find some one who clearly mention what you are going to get with an account. You can find some good companies offerring huge bandwidth at this forum http://webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=4 akashik 04-24-2001, 01:22 AM 2gig+ or space and 50gig+ of transfer for $50 a month? Not to stab you in the foot or anything but you might find that a little hard to come by. I would be pretty interested in anyone you did find though :) Greg Moore m6.net 04-24-2001, 01:39 AM I think I will be interested too. Please don't forget to post the name of the web hosting company which offer that much of web space and bandwidth for less than $50. All the best with your search. Razgo 09-03-2001, 12:06 AM Hi, I am currently with Bluedomino.com for nearly a year now. Whilst I have no complaints as such to talk about. I do know I am using 10 gig a month transfer and rising. I am expecting an email from them anytime soon to tell me I amusing to much bandwidth. I tried my best to ask them the current average banndwidth usage which is client divided by current resources. they refused to tell me. below is the live chat conversation I had with them. I think this is appalling. "Please wait for a site operator to respond. You are now chatting with 'Karen' Karen: Hello. How may I assist you? you: Ok i was just wondering about bandwidth you: I know you have unlimited bandwidth you: but that is divided by clients/resources Karen: We still provide unlimited bandwidth you: is there an averages figure at the moment Karen: No we do not have an averag figure since it changes daily you: yes I understand that, as it is a moving average you: however the average wouldn't be moving greatly Karen: What is your question? you: just curiouse as i like to keep you: any eye on my usage you: is it over 10 gig a month? Karen: I see... you: currently I only use around 500 meg at the moment Karen: This sounds acceptable you will be notified otherwise you: yes I understand that. thank you. but what is the secrete? Karen: What do you mean? you: I am just curiouse you: well there must be you: an approx average at the moment you: I was wondering what that average is Karen: As I've stated before I do not have an average number to provide you with, sorry you: Ok If I phone, will someone be able to tell me? Karen: No, we are not given an exact number to provide you with, it is based on an average. If you exceed the amount you will be notified. you: yes, but I am not after an exact number. you: Even as a Bluedomino customer it is something I would like to know Karen: I can't give you any more information other than what I've stated above. you: Ok I will phone tech support then. you: one more question Karen: Is there anything else i can help you with? Karen: yes... you: is this chat software mad by you people? you: I mean made Karen: No this is not designed by us we use an outside source you: Ok it looks really good. you: will this software be available to us? Karen: Thank you for chatting. Good-bye. " /end chat. Anway I am going to find another host and am looking into Liquidweb.com as they have features I want to use that bluedomino don't have, like mySQL etc.... the thing is I came across the same issue with bandwidth with liquedweb.com. when they say 30 gig a month tranfer alowed they don't really mean it if you read the fine print which says this.. "additional note: Fair Use of Resources: Sites staying within the transfer limitations may still be subject to review if using more than 15% of total system resources. The average server houses a minimum of 200 sites with no substantial load, making this a very fair number." So what is the bandwidth allowable?? It just annoys me that I don't have a set limit I can work with. oh well aside from that liquideweb seems good on the surface :) *Razgo* |
