View Full Version : I Lost a Brown Recluse Spider

I just saw a light tan spider in my bedroom crawling on the curtains. I hit it with my houseshoe and obviously missed because the arachnid wasn't on the bottom of my shoe or on the floor either. So, it got away.

I thought the brown recluse was dark brown; but after doing some research, I found out that they can vary from tan to dark brown; and one website pic looked exactly like the Brown Recluse spider that I saw.

The good news is that there are only 2 venomous spiders in my area, the Brown Recluse and Black Widow, and they are both shy and non-agressive spiders who seldom cause death.

The bad news is that they are both plentiful in my area, and I have to go to bed knowing there's one in my bedroom somewhere lurking the dark while I sleep.

LOL... though that's really not so bad.

A brown recluse can cause skin tissue damage that requires a skin graft. They also do cause death to the very young, those in poor health or old... and I fit one of those categories. Oh well.

I fit into one of those as well .... no hang on ... there's only one category I don't fit into! :(

Yeah, I figure it's not worth worrying about. If's it not a tornado or some other natural disaster, then it could be a mosquito bite where you get that west nile virus, smallpox or something else. There's always something waiting out there to get you, in addition to normal health concerns.

:) Maybe not, but if a Black Widow had bit me instead, that could be like getting married. :)

Where I live, the winning combo would be being bit by a black widow and scrubbing the wound with poison oak.
Of course, it would get even better if a mountain lion was hiding behind a bush...

My sister found a live spider inside a grape once.

The way i see it - its safest just to eat 100% processed food and leave the fresh stuff out of your diet.

Ok growing up i had a younger brother get seriously hurt where it effected him for the rest of his life, so my mom went paranoid on everything trying to protect us. And I remember the horror stories she told me about these brown recluse spiders that lived in our area. I was scared to put my hand in a shoe or anything without freaking out one was going to be in there and kill me

I mean that is not a thing you tell to a 21 yr old

Lol jk i was about 5-6 I think.

I once cracked open a walnut to have a whole heap of baby spiders run out at me. Considering I'm extremely arachnophobic (I've been known to sleep in a different room because of a spider that went unkilled) I was terrified.

Currently I share my bedroom with about 3 of these http://media.shaunewing.org/images/photos/spider.jpg - they're the only spiders that don't bother me. They're good because they will eat other nastier spiders and bugs (yes, I've seen them eating other spiders!) and they're harmless to humans :)

Apparently the females live for almost 3 years; the males live for 1. It was quite surprised when I found out.

I'm going to vacuum my bedroom. I haven't done it in awhile.:) That should take care of some of those critters. I'm not about to go in my closet and clean though. :)

This reminds me of when I was a kid, and there was this large spider on my grandmother's back porch. It had a huge pouch on the back. I squashed that spider with a broom, and hundreds of little baby spiders ran all over the place. I was scared to death.

Maybe, I'll start a "snake" thread so that we can all tell of our snake experiences. :(

LoL, thats nothing :)

I get lots of them in my house since it backs up to woods.. whats fun is turning the shower on and getting in, closing the door and seeing a black widow about the size of a floppy disk sitting in the corner running from the water wanting out with you in the shower hehe poor little guy... needless to say he got the flush treatment :)

I wouldn't stress it too much. I have had one run across my hand at my desk here. I had another in my laundry basket which ran across my hand when I was doing laundry. Had another 2 running around on my tackle box after I picked it up. The last time was out in the garage when I had another go fleeing across my arm as I was moving some cans around.

If you need to replace the one you lost just hollar. I have a nice supply of them here.

Sizes may vary from penny to half-dollar
Colors Black thru Tan

They didn't seem to aggressive, just wanted to get away. They dislike any movement and run away when areas are disturbed.

If your looking to spray them. You might try Lamda-Cyhalothrin works pretty well.

:D eeewwwww

Though, speaking of sprays, my mother-in-law has an interesting technique... she sprays them with hairspray - which sticks them to the wall, floor whatever - and then they can't run away whilst you clobber them with a shoe.

I need to leave, cos i keep feeling crawlies everywhere now.. thanx guys :stickout:

[on topic]For a second there I thought you were saying "houses" "hoe".[/off topic]Ok back on topic. When I lived in Anehiem CA, we had a shed that was infested with bees, spiders (black widow & yes brown recluse). You'd be lucky to go in and come out alive!:D:).

I've also been known to sleep in a diffrent room due to a spider not being killed and on the loose.

This thread is already making my skin crawl. Call me what you want, but spiders aren't my thing. :)

When I lived at home as a kid I had a sheet that seperated my room from the rest of the basement. A giant spider was crawling up the sheet and the closest thing I could find was a can of red spray paint. Needless to say, it was hard to explain to mom how red paint got all over the sheet, the floor, and 2 walls. :stickout: I did eventually drown him though. :D

I don't know about spraying them. I read that pesticides and foggers don't work well because their bodies don't absorb them like cockroaches and other insects do. Sticky traps were the most recommended.

I also read that Black widows and Brown recluses like it dry, and they don't usually hang around where there is high humidity. That surprised me. I thought the opposite. I've seen spiders in showers too (at youth camp, decades ago).

I think I learned more than I really want to know about these critters. :)

You want to know about a freaky spider. Research about the Sydney Funnel Web. It's as big as your hand, has fangs large enough to bite through a leather shoe, are "aggressive", and are the most poisonous spider in the world. Now THAT's a spider!

That's why I won't go under my house anymore. I'm too afraid of spiders and snakes. I just hire someone if I need something done under the house. It's been at least 5-10 years since I've gone under my own house.

Yeah, the funnelweb spider. That one I knew about and have seen the documentary on Discovery Channel on that one. With all the Discovery Channel I've watched, I've never seen a program on the Brown Recluse. Seems like I saw one on the Black Widow, though.

They had a real nice one about spiders that showed a lot about the Recluse. Pretty gross stuff with people having ulcers the on their entire back of a giant sore, etc. Stuff about a child dying that was bit at school.

It's pretty rare to be bit, and even at that, quite rare to be deathly ill or to die. It happens, but more people die of bee stings and that sort of thing than spider bites.

I'd really not worry about it. In fact, if you ever were bit, you may as well be playing the lottery. More people die from shark and alligator incidents. If you got bit, you'd have a better chance of making yourself sick by thinking and worrying about it.

I was bit by a big black widow this Summer, and that's about the time they are most potent. It was a big female with eggs, so it was the prime time to not be bit. Nothing happened other than getting sick and probably sicker thinking about it. I have pictures of it (before I killed it) and it was about two or three times the size of a quarter (it's next to a quarter in the picture), a big, fat disgusting thing.

Hello,

Spiders don't scare me.... much.
Depends, I've never seen a Black Widow or anything like that except on TV. So I don't know. Needless to say, I doubt I would "baseball" bat them.... if any spider bites you best to watch the damn thing in a jar or something, incase you don't know what it was or thats what I saw on TV  .
