Greetings people.

Around X-MAS time, I will be staying in the USA (Washington DC/New York City) for about 2 weeks as a vacation.

I'm bringing my laptop and I was hoping I could also surf the internet.
Now, I live in The Netherlands... So dailing to a "foreign" country (USA --> NL) would be rather expensive from my hotel room.

Could anyone tell me:
Is there a FREE ISP service? I mean... Local dialup numbers, but no subscription/monthly fee? (We have those in the NLs)

Or, is there one where I can sign up online, free (pref.) or not, and which I can cancel after a month or so?

netzero is a backup I always keep on my laptops (they give you 10 hours/mo free) and last time i was in Fry's Electronics, Earthlink had a two month free special going. Not sure if that's all available out East tho.

You may also want to check out with your hotel if they offer access to the internet. Some do offer it, others don't.

yeah, it was nice when they had unlimited free with the banners, especially when the banners could be *cough* bypassed *cough*.
I use up the 10 hours in one day if I have to use them when my cable internet is down, which is thankfully rare.

the free ones were mentioned, but you could also do one of the "free trial offers" from AOL, EarthLink, WalMart Connect (wmconnect.com). Just use it for the two weeks (they give 1000 hours these days) and cancel when you're ready to leave :D.

Get AOL then cancel afterwards :)

Do not install this crap. In a lot of cases, it renders your REAL ISP useless. A reformat is the most realiable way to get rid of it.

they make it nearly impossible nowadays to cancel.

last year i had to end up cancelling a credit card so i could get away from them

I called them up, they asked why i canceled and they canceled it for me..

It was the canadian version of AOL tho...

Invest in a wireless network card... :) In the DC area there are so many unprotected networks you won't have a problem getting a connection.... of course, the legalities of this are questionable.

Sign up for AOL, you'll get 1025 hours free. Then cancel and contact the credit card company and tell them you're cancelling.
I've used AOL for years, back when it was the only ISP available in the small South Georgia town I lived in. Kept it because it works and I can get a local connection anywhere in the US. I've spent a lot of time in very small towns. Can always connect through AOL.
And I like the newsgroup reader and the Spam control on e-mail and WorldPlay Hearts.
I use it on a dialup and through cable connections.
There's always the option of using IE or Netscape or any other browser after connecting to AOL.
