free? All processors charge a % of the transaction. I have never used paysystems.com before but they charge something like 2.4%

http://www.hostcharge.com has a plan with free setup and no monthly charges. The downside is that they take 8% per transaction which will do you no good in the long run. Their paid plans themselves are extremely cheap though.

Netbilling seems cheap IF ... your volume is decent. They charge 1.5% + $0.15/transaction + $25/month gateway fee (same as most banks). Set-up fee is a one-time $199.

HostCharge seems steep at 8% ... until you do the math. No minimums, no gateway fees, no transaction fees, just 8%. If your volume is low, it saves you money. They accept like 16 credit cards and deal in a number of currencies, in case you're an international player.

PayPal is a low 2.9% + $0.30/transaction. No gateway fee. Set-up is free. People are used to it and it seems uncomplicated, plus Wells Fargo Bank now does all of the actual processing for PayPal.

Online Data (http://www.e-onlinedata.com) has worked well for us. They have a few different options for gateways such as Authorize.Net as well as a standard web-based virtual terminal.
