...no you need to have your own host which will supply you with the details you need to get a presence on the web.

there are so many....
1. try and read first... what hosting is all about... when you need it, and which things are bogus and which are real!
2. make a list of what you need, and then post in the "Webhosting Request" area...
3. Then wait for some offers, see if they match... read about the company's that offer them... if they have a good reputation etc.
4. order... and start your site!

If you just wanna play a bit with homepages, perhaps a free hosting provider like www.geocities.com would be a good start point...

Get the book "HTML for the World Wide Web" by Elizabeth Castro, published by PeachPit Press. It's available at Barnes and Noble, Borders, etc.
It takes the mystery out of getting a site on the internet and explains things like hosting, html, .jpgs and gifs., etc. A great book to learn from and a good reference.

host = company/person who has a sever/many servers/rent space in datacenter and lets people use part of that space for their own websites/homepages and/or forums and databases.

reseller = person/company that rents a lot of space from a host and then make smaller portions for people to rent.

Now we are all dying to know why you want one. Is it is to upload pictures to post on message boards for instance, or have a website?
Message boards, and free website hosts such as geocities mentioned above do NOT allow you to FTP into their sever.
If you have created a website on your PC, and want it to show up on the WWW, you will need a webhosting account. If you sign up with a "pay" host, you should be sent the details to FTP in, and upload your site.

A lot of people "asume" other people know as much as they do themeselves :)
