View Full Version : Your Favorite Host and Why!?
jehraen 04-22-2001, 02:06 PM Hi everyone :)
I chanced upon this site from a link from this page :
http://www.forumhosts.com/hosts.htm which might prove useful to some.
Anyways, I know there's been requests for recommendations of hosting companies but I hope that I can address this request in a slightly different way. Hope this will be as helpful to others as well as it will be helpful to me. :)
My question is :
1) Who is your favorite host?(Preferably you're hosting with them now, of course :))
2) Why are they your fav host?(List the features/points as to why you feel they are your fav. host.)
3)What sort of site do you host?(Because everyone's needs are different, the type of hosting requirements will be different too.)
Hope everyone will spare some time to take part in this 'survey'. Thanks in advance for your responses! :)
WaffenSS 04-22-2001, 05:29 PM My favorite host is called "Me"
-Edward- 04-22-2001, 06:39 PM KDAWebSerices LTD - http://www.kdawebservices.com
They provide excellent support. Very friendly and you will always get a response to an issue no matter how big or small.
I have a reseller account with them right now. I dont resell though. Didn't even order a reseller account they upgraded me for free when they moved servers :).
I am going to be setting up a remote chat hosting service starting from May 1st i hope *fingers crossed i get it all done in time*.
jehraen 04-22-2001, 09:10 PM Thanks for the reply, Technics :)
Hmm, 103 views but only 1 decent reply. Are people 'ashamed' of their host or something? All I made is a simple request for the readers of this board to answer a short questionaire.

Most of us our hosts here so. How can most of us have a host to advertise lol

c0bra 04-22-2001, 09:46 PM hehe I dunno how true that is. I've seen a ton of posts from people looking for shared hosting and sharing their experience of hosting companies in general. I guess those people are bored with posting the same old lists of reliable hosts.
Out of all the hosting companies I have used, my favourite so far would have to be JaguarPC. I joined them after reading many recommendations here. Why would they be my favourite? For $10-$15 a month (depending on your bandwidth requirements) you get a feature rich package, cpanel, generous bandwidth allowance and excellent support.
Our celebrity site with JagPC uses forums, mailing lists and is driven by PHP and MySQL. It needs 10gig of bandwidth a month.
I'm going to be trying weinbar shortly for another of our sites. Again, they've gotten good reviews from customers here so we'll give their shared hosting a shot.
schweiz 04-22-2001, 09:57 PM My favorite host: webstrike (http://www.webstrikesolutions.com/hosting.html). Features that come with their only plan are not too impressive, but .. well, they give 12 months free :D Along with exceptional support and uptime, they do make a great host for personal/small biz websites.

Actually, I posted a nearly identical thread at sitepoint and got some *really* good responses. C'mon people! :)
valueweb are my favorite... i've never had any probems.
wizardshosting are good also.
Softerweb 04-23-2001, 11:04 AM Tera-byte.com is the best host, for shared hosting, I have ever experienced. Their prices, support and, most important, uptime have been wonderful!

Synergy 04-23-2001, 11:21 AM My favorite host is Bluegenesis.com, the girl in the magazine ad attracted me to them :stickout
baileysemt123 04-23-2001, 10:45 PM I like Ventures Online.
Why: the fast, friendly fellows (and lady) who take such good care of their customers.

ThatBillGuy 05-27-2001, 12:35 AM http://www.webstrikesolutions.com are hosting 5 of my sites. They're insanely good, especially for the low price you pay. Great reselling package, and great hosting in general.

JBIZ718 05-27-2001, 03:40 AM Beside myself off course.
I think Rackspace has a solid foundation.
Good support, but quite expensive.
Some others then are quite different are
st3.com, great for streaming, built there own network. Actually really cool.
I am also a big fan of Cable and Wireless managed services as well as Aperian.
Good people over there.
Biggest favorite, st3.com, not in my niche, and are suppost to be great.
Joe
As mention earlier, most of us are hosts. However, I want to say taht I really like Tera-byte.com/4Webspace.com because they have excellent technical support and are always ontop of everything. Everytime I have a question, I don't email them, instead I go into their chatroom and NOC helps me out! I recommend them to everyone!!!!!
..oh ya and I also recommend dim8.net <g>

I currently host with the following: HostPro, Digiweb, Site5, Hostrocket, and Sentris.
Digiweb - Currently hosts a static website which gets approx. 5 gig of data transfer a month
I admit I am not very happy with their service, and the only reason why I am keeping the site here is because one of my colleagues is not yet ready for the "hassle" of transferring hosts yet. Slow answer to email by techsupport, downtimes sometimes go up to 12 hours -- wherein even *their* techsupport address bounces, extra charge for the weirdest things (mysql and imail setup, duh), and the clincher: they deleted one of our websites by mistake last year! Sheesh!
HostPro - Very very happy with their service. Only drawback is the price. I got them for a high-traffic and databsed-driven websites that we have, and it runs like a baby. It will break my heart, but we might have to move out in the next two months for the simple reason that we can't afford anymore the $10 per modification of our zone file. Weird reason, probably. But I'm not in charge of the bills for this website :)
Site5 - Currently hosts a forum, ad server, free email, and my personal domain name.
There are times when I really would like to fly to their main office and scream my heart out, most especially last year when they had a big problem on one of their infamous servers. But the thing with Sit5, Vince's and Matt's very prompt answers to all your needs and all your techsupport tickets would always take back whatever vow you made to switch hosts (of course, it also helped that bandwidth/speed is better than ever now).
Good tech support is very rare now (and so are 5 domain pointers, hehe). And their patience in answering all our questions (from the majorly stupid ones such as how to backup our mysql data) is very touching. I know -- I can be such a softie when it comes to techsupport :)
I currently have two accounts with them, and do not plan to switch anytime soon. Possible room for improvement: network notifications / email updates, online archive of our invoices.
Hostrocket - I also like them. If there was no Site5, I'll probably go to Hostrocket. But we're probably moving out, since we only got an account with them because we thought of moving out of Sit5 last year. Not much experience with their tech support, but having them on my ICQ list does wonders to me everytime I connect to the internet. It's very comforting someone is always out there watching over your server.
Sentris - Currently hosts some databased-driven web and WAP sites.
Very affordable, although tech support is something you need to get used to -- it will take them from a couple of minutes to 3 days to answer your email (although I got around it by sending another copy of the email). Cross your fingers whenever you hit Send :)
Major problem is a situation when they needed to reformat one of their servers on NT Priority Hosting, and eek, they didn't back up our data.
I still have a nagging suspicion that Win2000 is not properly configured. Their website and online manual needs a serious revamp.
No problems in the new server yet. Very affordable too. Their reseller account gives me a lot of flexibility.
BigBytes 05-29-2001, 10:35 AM 1) Netweaver www.netweaver.co.uk
2) Excellent service, support, uptime, fast servers, good features list and control panel.
3) UK specific hosting, domain and reseller guide/database, www.bigbytes.co.uk
been with them almost a year now, seen them grow from being a Fasthosts reseller to owning 5 (I think) servers running Linux and Win2K
do I sound happy :D
Adam_S 05-29-2001, 01:08 PM Vibus are great for the reselling.. SOS's us from the dreaded fasthosts. Brilliant support, unbelievable pricing.. :)
They made moving away from being a reseller almost upsetting.. :(
Chicken 05-30-2001, 04:01 AM Ok, now that we've got some decent responses going, I'll post mine. By far the best provider I have dealt with is Steve and the http://www.tera-byte.com staff. Minor problems have always been fixed and it was nice to be able to call them when I needed to (I posted a while ago that I thought someone was hacking in to the server and it turned out to be them installing something, heh).
Although they are inexpensive, their network has been very good and their support helpful. As I've said, I don't expect everything to run perfectly, but I expect that things not right, be made right ASAP, and to be treated as if I am the King of England :D
Experience:
RaQ3 colocated at their facility from 6/2000 - errrr ?
RaQ4r leased from errrr? - present
Keep the list going as someone might find themselves in a similar situation and your post alone might at least give them the best lead they can get in their search for a reliable host.
mekmal 05-30-2001, 05:02 AM By far f5 over all!
Alot of sites promise what is imposible some offer what they don't even have, others just outwrite steal your money or charge your account after leaving.
Read the pages upon pages of text on this forum alone.
Very few hosting sites are run by honest people but here at f5 they done something different.
They made the costumer #1
weagle 06-01-2001, 01:18 AM the person who said rackspace is not expensive anymore, I was ticked when I started seeing $99 dedicated server and especially the exact same configuration as mine with more bandwidth for like $160 a month when I was paying around $425 a month (one site I compared it to ie linuxwebnet.com) almost the same configuration with 1 tech support. What rackspace did was offer a 6month contract at $200 a month so that is not as bad, I expected a better deal though, but that is the deal rackspace is doing now, just find a website that is similar config with tech support open a ticket to billing and tell them look this site is charging this much you're overcharging me, what are you going to do with the price now and just see how they will react they will lower it. Rackspace is a big overcharge in the dedicated server industry.
So far, 4webspace/Tera-byte is the best Host I have ever seen.
Inexpensive, yet with good support. And mostly all the support staff there are very friendly and helpful. Moreover, they have 24/7 support. :) So I can ask for support in their chat room at anytime! That's a great feature that I think most host should have. Well, at least for those who don't care and don't afraid of hackers group channels taking over war.
Can I have my own company to be listed here as my favourite host? :p You might ask why? 'Cos it's the best. (Maybe just for myself) :D

Despite RackSpace's expensiveness, its reliability/uptime and superb tech staff more than make up for it, and it's quite deliberately factored into their pricing ranges.
They may be expensive, but they sure as hell are worth every single cent you put in. Besides, they would have significantly dropped their prices by now if they were running short on clients ;)
When was the last time you heard a complaint about RackSpace's tech support, or any spate of downtime with them? ;)
dherman76 06-01-2001, 09:21 AM <<EDIT>>
I used to love CFOX HOST but they were acquired by Ventures Online. Chuck was extremely curteous and helpful.
Christoph 06-01-2001, 09:26 AM Well, Wizardshosting made a very good impression to me. I am with them for short time so far but what I have experienced so far - good support, good features and a fair price.
I had a problem last night with my site (which was a code problem as I found out later) and I submitted a trouble ticket - within less than 30 minutes I received a response from their support team - and that was around 8.00 PM MST. Also - before I had signed up - my pre-sales questions were answered within a couple of hours.
At this point I can highly recommend Carlos and his team!!

They are (trustworthy) put it this way and VERY RELIABLE, I don't trust anyone else. It's true they would have not lowered the price but they took a big blow I remember just 5months ago they sent an email saying they had teama/teamb (two tech departments) then said they removed teamb (obviously they slashed half their staff) because of the stock market/dotcom/ads dropping industry. Just last month I started feeling the aftershock (less revenue, dotcom sites not paying me for their advertising) so I had no choice but to find an alternative in cheap prices but it's great that they still were reasonable to negotiate close to something that will help sustain the website and not let it go into bankrupcy like many of the other dot com's out there. I guess if they did this back then (offer better deals) they wouldn't have lost most of their sales/staff but now they are starting to do it so they don't get any worse than they are. If anyones in the same boat as me and are with rackspace you can slash the price by 50% if you can show another website tha is similar I know 99servers.com shows tonnes of dedicated server sites for $50-99 a month however they do charge $130 or so for the tech support or no support whatsoever.
JKLIVIN 06-01-2001, 08:45 PM I tried Verio, ugh, about 2 years ago and switched to Communitech.net and have been consistently happy for just under 2 years
<<MOD NOTE:>>
JKLIVIN, I'll ask that you do *not* recommend your employer.

timbo 06-01-2001, 09:27 PM It has to be http://www.aletiahosting.com - STACK loads of features and, best of all, top quality support.
I mean, sometimes I've received support replies in under 30 minutes (much better then the 1 week for ADDR.COM!)
:O)
It's nice to of FINALLY found a host I can trust....

neilest 06-02-2001, 07:06 PM cedant.com (http://www.cedant.com) would have to be my favourite. I was a little skeptical but it turns out that their services are great, always responded to my questions promptly and have proven to me they are professional and know what their doing. The server speed and uptime are very good with a good price as well.

Just came across this special offer....not bad at all for rackspace! $150/month
http://www.rackspace.com/promo/150_linux.php
sweethorizons 06-03-2001, 09:56 AM I strongly recommend Hostrocket (http://www.hostrocket.com) because they have tons of features, amazing tech support, and the price is the cheapest. I have 3 sites hosted with them and they have been nothing but sweet to me. I know the tech guy and he helps me out all the time when I write the wrong code. If you write them an ticket expect a response in 2-4 hours.

that's about right, I'm paying $200 under 6 month contract with 64megs ram (but 8gig travan backup though) and 30gig bandwidth a month. The internet is taking more of a dive now, I can imagine 6 months from now it'll be $150 for a lot more bandwidth.

greatgraddage 06-06-2001, 11:16 AM Servus.ws for me, donovan is very helpful and their uptime is good (except for that HD problem but that could happen to anyone, not their fault). Support at most 12 hours, I could not ask for much more :)
Oh yea, great price too :)
phbroad 06-06-2001, 04:56 PM I moved photoguide.to to jaguarpc.com a few months ago. They managed their datacentre move from VDI to DI very efficiently. Support is very good, both on the support forums and by support ticket. 8 Gigs / 10 USD.
I also signed up for the WHT special at Weinbar (20 Gigs/ 15 USD) and may put part of the site there as it grows. Support is also good, and they also have a forum.
You can compare the servers here (a page of india photos):
It'd be great to get some download times (from clicking the link to the last photo appearing) from different parts of the world. Perhaps a few people could post these figures for their city/provider?
Weinbar server:
http://216.139.227.55/goa/cowsandpalmtrees.html
Jaguarpc server:
http://www.photoguide.to/goa/cowsandpalmtrees.html
This'll help me with my question:
Option 1: put part of photoguide.to on the weinbar server (i.e. a particular directory).
Option 2: use the weinbar server as a mirror server.
Can anyone help with the most effifcient way of doing these - if I go for option 2 is there any way of the user automatically going to the fastest server for the network they're on and of synchronising one server when the other's content is updated?
Cheers,
Philip
