View Full Version : Free Item = Advertisement?

I guess I wasn't aware that giving away something for free was considered advertising. The other day I posted an ad in the design forms and today I posted a preview and download link offering a free template that I designed specifically for WebHostingTalk members which said thread was classified as advertising. Not really sure where to post my freebie, I guess I was able to circumvent the advertising post rule by posting it in the wrong place, unaware of where to post my free offering and unaware that free = advertising.

Is there a way to offer freebies on WHT and not have the give-away thread (eg: no product for sale) be considered an advertisement? I've never advertised /free/ stuff before. I designed this specifically for WebHostingTalk.com members to give something back to the community. Where do things of this nature go?

Giving away freebies is generally considered as advertisement because it brings some form of publicity to your site or service.

For example, you giving away something free to WHT members shows them how good (or bad) you are at producing templates, which may encourage them to buy a unique template from you, potentially bringing you customers.
