View Full Version : To buy a .me or .net?

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking of buying a domain name to host my portfolio...right now I'm using a domain that has nothing to do with my name, personality, etc. Eventually I'll probably end up buying both a .me or .net, but I want to purchase one now and then the other later.

I like how personal .me is, and it seems to be a good choice for a portfolio. I would use my first and last name, which would be very personal and possibly help brand myself. However, I'm not sure if .me is as great as it's hyped up to be.

.net seems like a practical extension...am I getting sucked into the hype of .me names, or is it worth a shot? Again, I would just use my first and last name.net. Does a .net seem more professional?

What are your thoughts? Any of you own a .me domain, or had a similar dilemma?

don't forget .im which you can get cheaper at name.com

to answer your question though, go for the .net first since it's more likely to be registered by someone else, i guess.

you can't come up with a cool .com? ;)

.net definately.... Personally use a .net for my own site (paulmillar.net) - and I did actually own the .com for this a couple of years back but let it drop because I preferred .com.

If its just for personal purpose then you can use .me extension.

Still it will be much costly and it would be better to stick with .com TLD's..

.me domains are actually really cheap if you shop around $2 per year ish.

If I had a personal blog I would go with .me. I get the feeling it's a lot more personal as well.

.net seems more professional of course. And I'd say that search engines will rank .net domain higher than .me

Never forget the .me is a ccTLD. It belongs to Montenegro. At the moment they are trying to market it as a pretend-GTLD, but that doesn't mean they'll still be doing this in ten years' time. Also, don't forget that this is part of former Yugoslavia and that there is still some instability in that part of the world and that things could flare up again.

(See also the thread about .co, Colombia... same applies here, really!)

definitely .net - much more traditional/stable TLD.

Definitely choose the .net, if the .com isn't available. And yes, I think you are being caught up in the hype of the .me promotion.

The .net has better technical underpinnings.

For example, it's dns resolution chain is shorter. Therefore, it will resolve faster. Nothing to do with branding. But hey, if it makes the page come up faster ...

now .me at $5.99 and .net at $6.99
www.such.as

But I think .net is better

I think a .me domain is good for a personal website and I like the fact it is only two letters but then a .net domain has more resale value.

Agreed, for personal site .me preferred but if you are going to have a portfolio and also sell designs via your website i would suggest .net

Stick with .com if you can

.net or .org is second most recognized

.me and others are trashy spam looking domains that are not well known and people tend to stay away from them.

.me sounds like a TLD of a country. My preference would be .com/.net

.NET should be a last resort. Try use a .COM EVEN if it's not exactly your first+last_name.com. My second choice would be your very own ccTLD; so if you're from Canada like me, use a .CA (or .US if you're from the States).

.net is for internet infrastructure.

If anyone actually listened to what .net/.com/etc was suppose to be used for then I'd agree with the above people. However, no one does. So get whatever tld you feel like and ignore anyone that says different.

.net is used for everything and a very common domain with valuable brand recognition.

I think the usage is not so limited. A lot of famous bloggers are using .net, like problogger.

It doesn't just "sound like" a ccTLD. It IS a ccTLD (Montenegro)

My opinion is to go for a .com

You might like to consider these suggestions:

(1) if you want to register example.ME, consider exampleme.COM instead

(2) .ME can be cheap to register but expensive to maintain

(3) For example, renewal of .ME is around $20 per year whilst renewal of .COM is about $7 per year. A 10-year renewal comparison will be $200 versus $70.

(4) There are at least 2 exceptions where .ME can be better than .COM. One is where you are artistically inclined and see the aesthetic value of TEACH.ME verus TEACHME.COM. The other is where the domain name is so popular that it is not available in other extensions. Try searching for 888 and if you can find it in any extension, then I will say LUCKY.YOU

(5) In the final analysis, think about the value of xxx.ME versus xxxME.com, consider the cost of maintenance (easy to buy, hard to sell, expensive to hold) and its popularity.

All the best to you.

Why would you want to go in for a .me or .net when .com is one of the best ever domain names that you can get !?

I suppose if that is your business name that would be reasonable to get all domain name extensions for it.

Ouch! I've been away from this site too long. I bought an .me yesterday. Should have browsed around or at least learned more about .me's before purchasing it. So .me is becoming like .info's ?
