View Full Version : Does location matter when resolving through openDNS?

Hi,

I transferred a web site (let's call it transfer.com) from the server here in San Diego to a server in LA. I suspended the domain on the old server (did not delete the DNS entries yet). It has been almost 24 hours but my computer still resolves transfer.com to the old IP in San Diego even after clearing my DNS cache. Online tools that I've tried all resolve to the new one in LA. I use OpenDNS as my DNS servers, and I tried their cache tool which also resolves to the new box in LA.

I am the only one resolving to the old one. Does this have anything to do with the fact that both the old server and my PC are in San Diego? Or am I being impatient? I transferred many sites before, I don't remember waiting this long to see it on my end.

Thanks in advance.

Or am I being impatient?

I think so, but if you haven't already, you might try restarting your computer. I've seen occasions where it still comes up with the old one, even after clearing the DNS cache but resolves properly after a restart. How long it takes is usually a function of how long the TTL is set for, and how long ago a particular DNS server last queried the authoritative DNS.

Nevermind.
I forgot that I am resolving through a domain controller which has its own cache and needs to be cleared using dnscmd /clearcache
Thanks
