I had this customer's domain that expired on 22-feb-2010, however instead of being put on redemption it has been captured for showing advertising. Is this a common practice?

Hello,

At NameCheap we have a 27-day grace period after domain expires when you can reactivate it without any extra (eg. redemption) charges. Once the domain expires it is redirected to our default parking page - is this the page you refer to?

Domain will be put into redemption after this grace period and can also be put into extended redemption period after that. This all depends on a domain and its TLD.

Kind regards,
Nata T.

in general,
it is common for registrars to point expired domains to a landing page with advertisements on it.

Considering it's been over a month and a half since expiration, be grateful they've held on to it and not simply released it back to be registered by someone else :)

If you don't want the ads then renew the domain? :P

The domain is indeed in extended redemption grace period and is pointing to a default parking page for expired domains.

:)
But I thought namecheap would eventually release the domain, and not pass it to Enom.com, who has finally captured it and asks
several $$ for renewal.

Yes there is nothing unusual. After the domain is expired you get a grace period and after that it is captured for showing advertisements..

It seems the domain name was originally registered in NameCheap's reseller account with eNom?

This is why, on my really precious domains, I've added on an extra 5 years of registration. (Especially considering the upcoming price increases).

Some people just get busy and they forget to renew their domain - that's why I'm waiting for Google to forget to renew theirs in September 2011. :P

Or NameCheap.com which expires in two months!!! Richard not planning on staying in business?

Nata, is their something you want to tell us?

Hey, I'm just joking. :D

That could potentially happen, albeit not likely - it reminds me of when MSFT forgot to renew their domain. fail.

Mmm...

So what I find written here, is incorrect
http://www.info.info/faq/6

The Redemption Grace Period is a thirty (30) day period that begins after a registrar requests that the registry delete a domain name.
RHP lasts for five (5) days, and during this time the name is locked. After five (5) days, the name will become available for re-registration.

In my home 30 + 5 = 35
..today this 35 the days have expired, but domain have new expired date 2011

if this thing is correct, show me a document (web site or other)

In June, I intentionally let a .com name I had registered with Name.com expire. I noticed in WHOIS that they renewed the domain, for one year. They sent me emails for awhile, but I assume now they have it for sale.

Put the domain names on auto-renew mode if you are worried about their expiry. I use Dreamhost for all domain registrations, they are really really good at that.
