View Full Version : Advice from Hosts needed: The CMS Debate
AquaCyclone 05-05-2010, 01:41 AM I know I can run all kinds of CMS scripts. Some are more heavy on the server then others. A recent comment I saw on Drupal being a resource hog when I was always told it was a resource light CMS has me wondering. When your customers are setting up a good ole CMS to use, and you had a say on it, which would you advise them to use? I will list the most popular ones I can think of, but with an Other option so you can throw down in replies. Replies on the listed and any unlisted CMS' is far game. I'm genuinely interested here.
The poll is listed in no particular order, and I have not used 90% of these. I just included as much variety as I could. I left Other in there so you can slap some down I haven't listed. Comments on the ones above, or one I didn't mention is welcome. Especially on it's cpu/mem usage, how server friendly it is.
Mods: I couldn't decide between this forum, Hosting Software and Control Panels, or Programming Discussion. I ended up putting it here to try and get as many Hosts to reply as I could. If you wanna move it I completely understand.
MattS 05-05-2010, 02:32 AM Custom CMS is pretty nice for the gaming site I run. Joomla would be my main choice as Wordpress is mostly blogging.
jphilipson 05-05-2010, 02:54 AM I prefer customers to not use Joomla. The others are OK. Just too may exploits in the software and it's extensions. We have a lot of customers using Drupal, and we never see issues with that, so it gets my vote.
jwebhost 05-05-2010, 03:39 AM Wordpress is pretty neat. Joomla is okay, and the other's are alright, but can sometimes lead to a little-over use depending on how busy it gets. :)
Scientist 05-05-2010, 04:20 AM Drupal or Wordpress for me. Drupal with CCK and Views saves time on writing code but the learning curve can be a nightmare. Nowadays I just use wordpress though, so much easier to get simple sites up and running.
SiberForum 05-05-2010, 04:26 AM I have used joomla for several months. I find this CMS pretty good one.
allin1 05-05-2010, 05:48 AM I would go for Joomla or Drupal, as those are real easy to understand and you have a huge community behind which can help if you you search for help.
040Hosting 05-05-2010, 05:55 AM Joomla is a great CMS, but if you can handle your customers requirements with i.e. Wordpress already the question is if you should expose them to all the features of i.e. Joomla.
Each CMS has its own strength, and group of people supporting it. I do not think there is a good or bad one.
The remark that Joomla would have to many plugins which are a security issue, the same counts for any other CMS; in my experience if you keep track of updates well you should not have any issues at all.
agustan 05-05-2010, 06:23 AM I've been using Drupal for about 4 years or so and my clients sites were made by it. They are just happy with Drupal and have no problem :)
So I vote for Drupal.
ldcdc 05-05-2010, 06:27 AM Personally, I'd recommend Wordpress, especially to inexperienced customers, as it's easy to understand, use, upgrade, pretty flexible, will run a typical site just fine and there are lots of templates to use out there. Coupled with a cache plugin, it can be light on CPU usage as well.
HostXNow 05-05-2010, 03:48 PM I use e107 ( http://e107.org ) for several sites. Check it out.

Moved to Web Design and Content ;)
the_pm 05-05-2010, 05:55 PM ExpressionEngine is a glaring omission from this list!
WordPress is best for simple, inexpensive, everyday use. Other than that, it's custom CMS development all the way.
PaulM 05-06-2010, 10:43 AM Wordpress all the way - unless you want to use Expression Engine - then I'd highly recommend that.
